Collecting Urine Sample

I am going CRAZY!!

We had our appt. at Thoughtful House a couple of weeks ago.  I need to collect first morning urine from my little guy.  He is still not potty trained, so we were given the baggies...completely useless.

We have tried waking him up and then standing him in the tub with a bowl at the ready, but no luck...open to any ideas  - please??

( I am worried because we have to keep him off the supps and fruit until I can get the sample and I hate keeping him off all that stuff in the middle of flu season for so long)

Do you have the bags that have the adhesive on them?  They make bags for young children who are not potty trained, they have adhesive on them and you can attach the bag (temporarily) around the scrotum and penis.  We did this before Adam was trained, and we would put on the bag (usually waking him up as we were doing it so he didn't go in his diaper before we could get him changed in the morning), cut a hole in a diaper and put his diaper back on him with the bag pulled through the hole, and then another diaper on top of it.  The reason for the two diapers is when we tried the bag with just a diaper over it, it ALWAYS came loose and leaked from being squished in the diaper.  The second diaper also kept him from messing with the bag.

I do have the bags with the adhesives on but I can't make them fit on around his "stuff" correctly I guess because it leaks...I will try the 2 diaper method tomorrow morning.

As usual, thanks for the advice Julie - It is much appreciated.

I went through the same thing with my son a few months ago.  I needed to get a urine  sample from my son and the bags wouldn't work for us . So what I did one morning(very early) is I gave him lots of liquid & left him without a diaper. I watched Dora with him and as soon as it looked like he was about to go I would place the bowl in front of him. It tooks a few attempts(about 2 hours) but thankfully I managed to collect enough for his lab work.

We eventually got ours using the adhesive bags, took us three tries. [QUOTE=faith74]

The problem with this is it's not first morning urine anymore as you've introduced liquids into the system, so the urine you're getting is not only what he's produced overnight (especially since it took several hours to get enough).  Test results will be skewed.  First morning urine is more concentrated than urine produced after food and drink have been consumed, and most of these tests need that concentrated urine to give accurate results.
