Vitamin D Levels - Hypovitaminosis???

Tori's 25-Hyrdoxy Vitamin D results came back.  She's 4 yo.  Her overall D level was 33.  D2 was 32 and D3 was 1.3.  Her pedi says that's "normal."

Everything I've read indicates the desired range for children should be a value of 40 mg or higher and that ranges below 40 indicate a shortage of D.

Tori spends LOTS of time outdoors and we're in a sunshine state.  She's on the Kirkman's Super Nu Thera (only contains 100 mg of D).  I'm thinking we need to supplement.

She isn't scheduled to see the developmental pedi until January and they won't look at or comment on the labs until then.

Thoughts?  Recommendations?  She takes tablets just fine.

Hi,

Since we've read about vit. d on www.vitamindcouncil.org we decided to supplement with vit. d 3.  We started with 400 a day and now up to about 1,500.  I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but we added a tiny (1/5 capsule)  amount of vitamin K-2 to help vit. d absorption.  I took a whole cap. of vit K and felt kind-of funny for a few hours, so we don't know if this is good or not yet.

We think its helping, but slowly.

The guidelines indicate 1,000 IU per 25 lbs of body weight, up to 2,000 IU is safe for children over age 2 without having to closely monitor blood levels.  I think we want to do d3--more absorbable?--I just don't know if there's any variation better than another or if they're all pretty much the same.

I take 2000 IU per day since I am diabetic.  My kids do too.

You will be hearing a lot more about Vitamin in the news, the next couple of years.  Hopefully even from the government ....

And you want vitamin D3, yes.  You can buy inexpensive gummies at Wallyworld, even.
Gummies!  That'll work.   Thanks! My girl recently tested at 50 and our doctor told me to shoot for 80. I called the developmental pedi and that was her advice, too.  We've ordered a home test kit from the Vitamin D Council to run the test on Mikey (apparently, this is one we missed when we did the last round).  It ended up cheaper than a copay plus 30% for the lab to run it ($65 through the Vitamin D Council).

Okay.  Both kids have been doing 2000 IU of D3 since 10/26.  That's 3 days.  So far their leg pains (growing pains/restless leg syndrome) have stopped.  They've suffered with this every day and night for the last year (since we took them off of milk).  Even if that's all we get out of it (and I'm hoping we get other results too), that's good!

WOW that's great! We are not seeing any obvious results but the doc did say it takes several months of high dose to get the numbers up to where they need to be.

I don't know if it's just coincidence or not, but we started supplementing with vitamin D and C about 2 months ago (to start building up immunity since we're not doing the flu shot). Since then, Justin speech has taken off. He seems to be coming out with new stuff everyday. Very exciting!

That's great! We just started a few weeks ago for the same reason, and while I haven't seen a huge verbal gain, we are hearing a lot more casual speech.  DS is very verbal, but it usually sounds really stilted and formal.  Now, his four latest favorite phrases are gimme that, move over, hey stop that, and come get a hug!

Incidentally, I finally convinced my doc to check my D level a couple of weeks ago, and it came back at 19.  No wonder I stay sick all the time!  I'm taking prescription 50,000iu 3x/wk for a month, then supplementing at least 2,000/say on my own.  Hopefully, I won't stay sick all winter this year, and I'm already sleeping better.
