SIB questionI am new here. I have a teenager with ASD who has always had SIB since diagnosis. She is fairly high functioning, but SIB has been a mainstay. As she has gotten older the SIB has changed from head banging and hand biting, to cutting herself. I know how this would be dealt with in a neuro-typical child but i am at a loss for how to approach this with a child with autism. My ex's daughter (neuro-typical) used to cut and asking him for advice was rather unhelpful. He told me to institutionalize her to "scare" her out of it but I know that would cause a huge regression - not to mention I would never dream of institutionalizing her! Any advice would be very very welcomed and I will do my best to return the favor when I feel I can! Hi there! Can you predict when she is most likely to engage in the behavior? Are there times you can predict she will not engage in the behavior? Is she mad, is she seeking sensory, etc? Has school or anyone worked with you on trying to identify the "function" of the behaivor? |
