1st IEP Pls HelpHello Everyone, My DS 1st IEP is tommorrow. He was accepted to a great school and will attend from 8-2pm. My only prepared demand is for him to have a weighted vest for the 1st 2 hrs of the day and 1hr after nap. I also want to suggest arguementive technology. (Early Intervention gave him ST 2x wk 30mins, OT 2x wk 45mins, ABA 3x wk 1hr) Any suggestions? Im just wondering how its going to be? Should I be prepared for a battle? It sounds like you are doing a great job, but I have to ask: You have an IEP and a school at less than three? Are you paying for this with insurance, or is the school system in your state a lot better than Florida? Florida provides about an hour a week of ABA until pre-K, and even then, the public school options do not look like much. Hey Dave, I live in S. FL in broward county. DS is turning 3 tomorrow The school sys is paying for this. that's why I was soooooooo happy that he got in. Toured the school and it was great. The school (Google Baudhuin Preschool) has great support sys too. Its a private contact that the school pays. Regarding ABA, its one of the school's main mode. I'm glad to hear the meeting went okay. To pursue assistive devices, you might want to contact your state specialist. List here, along with other helpful links on assistive devices.tp://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13966& KW=assistive *Update* The IEP went well. Only complaint was OT give only 30 mins Anyhow, Im still glad he made it to a great autism based school. Thanks, Jess
I hope everything goes well and you have a supportive staff... it is possible. I can't see why OT wouldn't support weighted vest and ST augmentative communication. They kinda go together like peas and carrots... the only issue I've found with these is more on school staff use and making sure everyone is onboard to use them in the natural environment. Sometimes things can sent back and forth and not get used. The OT and ST observing classroom and making recommendations and modelling in class can be really helpful -- instead of solely pulling a child out. When is he starting at his new school? I don't see where there should be a problem with the vest, unless they don't have one. Do you mean assistive technology? If he's not speaking, or very limited they would probably start with pecs (picture exchange communication system). They usually don't go for the 'talking boxes' etc until they are making no process verbally, since ideally all the kids would speak. What you really need to ask for is evaluations for assistive tech, in theory that would find the system that would work best for him. If they say no to the vest, ask for a sensory eval. Good luck, don't be ready to battle unless they aren't being helpful. DS is starting aug 24th. he uses pecs at home and is good at it. On my way there, will post update Thanks for the posts Jess Congrats on getting your little one into a great school! Glad the IEP went well! :) |
