Conferences on Autism Dogs??I am very interested if anyone knows of any conferences involving Autism dogs are coming up in WI or near. I would love to go. Thank you Hi there. I know this is not what you are looking for, but I am searching for someone that would help me train a dog for my autistic son. You would be in MA by any chance would you? Heck if you want a vacation to MA next to a Lake Massapoag, we would even offer you a room! We have family on Cape Cod too just over an hour away... Yes, I am desperate! We want to find someone that could help us train a Goldendoodle for our son. We are looking at getting one for Spring of next year, but can find anyone versed in training these special pups who doesn't charge 13K because they are some know it all organization! What normal person has 13K? You are so right that the word needs to get out there more. I have been looking for over a year for help with this. Hope you find some conferences to be a part of and spread the word. If anyone knows anyone in Massachusetts that has experience, please let me know. Thanks a lot. Heather Hello, I have been training proessionally for over 32 years, and in the past 12 years have also been teaching Autistic children and I have put the two of them together, both hold a true passion for me. I don't charge 13k,in times I certaintly could use it, but I know that the children need this more, I charge 30.00 a day and I train here in WI,brrr, but I do travel to the homes and work with the family and child to develop a realtionship and knowlege for training and handling different training problems,a goldendoodle is a great choice, you have both the intelligence and calmness in one breed, and they are so cute. an added pleasure. what is needed for your certain situation tells the amount of time, I first train an extremly obedient dog, then go to work on the work needed for the individual child, and what the individual dog can achive, both are unique in their own ways,we can cetaintly discuss this more if you would be interested, the price I listed includes, training, the boarding, food, everything, untill I need to come and visit you, usually then it is the plane fair or the gas, which ever is cheaper for the both of us, please let me know if I can help in any way, i hope to hear from you soon. thank you for your inquiry. hope i can help in some way. lisa thank you or our reply, but i have been training dogs for the autistic for over 3 years now, and am looking for ways to get the word out, since i teach the dogs and the children, i love this work, but it just does not put food on the table,i am a single mom and need to provide for my daughter, thanks for any other ideas. Most walks will allow therapy dogs, if this is what you mean. I haven't heard of walks for just people with autism dogs. I could be wrong. lisa i would like to know more about what you do. and how they help each other. what kind of dogs are good choices? what kind of training? do you give pointers for people who are not close to you? do you have a book?![]() Hi, I am new to this forum and have a few questions myself about dogs and children with autism. My son is 9 1/2 yrs. old, basically non-verbal and I had thought about this for him, for safty reasons. However when we visit family that has dogs he gets very up-tight. I don't really think he is afraid of the dogs, he just doesn't want them licking him, or doesn't want them all over him. Any sugestions or thoughts? I see that it was said mix breds work best, any other suggestions about this? Where is the best place to look for a service dog? And not go into major debt for it? Thanks for any help! Sally I truly do believe that dogs do help children with autism, it sounds like a social issue with your son, but so hard for me to say without visiting... I have had a few reply's on this subject and I am willing to train for a very reduced fee of 800.00 start to finish, except if I would need to travel to your home for the intro. I am very much losing money on this, but I feel so strong that dogs do help. I am thinking your son should visit one dog at a time, while the dog is in a crate and let him approach the dog, and then as he becomes compfortable, tie the dog, you are trying to get the dog under control and on your sons terms... if your son uses pecs, a sentence may be of some help. I do like mixes and labs, and standard poodles for this work, above all, make sure the dog you are introducing is a mild manner dog, not noisey and active, this is were a crate can help. I hope I helped a bit,let me know if I can be of more help to you. thank you
Lisa hello, wickdwtrfals. yes, i wouldogs like to help anyone I can. I do like the mixed breeds, because the health issues are much less, and training tends to be a bit easier, I like the golden or labradoddles, I also like standard poodles, and some of the border collie mixes. it is a real search to find the right one. I unforuntly do not have a book, although it sure has been a thought. dogs can help alert when the child has left an area and even some i have trained can gently push the child back or lead back by the hand. also, if a child has problems with friends, the dogs are so not judging, and teach a real sense of belonging and will teach some patience, care and understanding, i have trianed many dogs for the autistic, and the comments have always been that the child really can bond and that learning spread to others in the life of the child... it truly is a great feeling, let me know what else i can help with. thank you lisa yes, i still check this sight, and i have not gotten anyone from here to train for, but i am training two labs for people in WI for the autism, it is going well, good luck with your training, and you have a great breed....I don't know if this would help you in anyway, but here's a website for you to check out, if for no other reason than curiosity. This is the local organization I'm going through for the obedience classes. It seems their main focus is pet therapy, but it does mention helping people train autism dogs too. http://www.dogsaver.org/dreamworkers/index.html May God bless your work, it's very important.
Lisa, just wanted to bump this post up. If you're still checking the board, let us know how your venture is going. I've just started obedience classes with my schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle) and hopefully at the completion of the classes we can go on to be certified in pet therapy. To kidog, where in WI are you located? I leave near Milwaukee. We just rescued a 7 month old boxer puppy. I realize this is not the ideal type of pet for a therapy dog, but my son adores him. We are taking him to obedience classes starting March 1st. I was thinking if she calms down a bit I would like to get her some more training. It is already helping Adam with social skills just from people asking about her.Hi everyone, im new to the forum, and it is really great, i live in Northern Ireland, and didnt even know about Autisim Dogs, until i read this, I have a 5 year old son, James with Autisim, he is non verbal, but does say Mama, Baba,, he has sensory issues too, we just got an 8 week old Dog De Bordeux Puppy 2 days ago, James is always smiling at it, and its really quite playful with him too, but he really doesnt have a sense of danger at all, what would your advice be about James with this type of dog, Thanks in advance, Paula xxx Just an FYI...I am fundraising for my son to get an autism assistant dog from 4 Paws For Ability. Yes I do need to raise $8,800 but the response I'm getting from both people I know and people I don't know is amazing. I can not believe how eager everyone is to help. We are having a fundraiser on April 15 and I'm pretty sure that we will reach our quota and then some. I have chosen this avenue because the other places I've found they require the child to be at least 6 and then there is like a 3 year waiting list. This way, I have somewhat control over the time...I certainly don't want to wait 3 years for the dog. I am in MA but will have to travel to Ohio to train for 2 weeks once we've raised our money. If your interested in checking them out their website is 4pawsforability.org. I do understand that having to raise that amount of money can be overwhelming but once we started to get the word out the response has been above and beyond! Just thought I'd throw it out there. Whenever you all feel lost or alone just remember my family and I are praying for you and your families. God be with you all and your children! [QUOTE=anna]
Hi there, I would be very interested in learning any special techniques. We recently adopted a dog (basset hound/lab mix) who has turned out to be a fabulous companion for my 12 year old moderately autistic son. I think that our dog (Rufus!) has great potential to be a true therapy dog, but I have no clue as to how to go about it. Please share info!! Thanks!

Hi Anna,
I don't know how they do it where you are but here in Wichita you have to get with your local obedience school and have your dog pass some basic courses before they are certified to be a therapy dog. I had considered it for my three year old pound puppy....and still might yet, I just haven't had the time or opportunity.
Good luck!
