Hersheys chocolate syrup???I saw numerous sites, including gfcfdiet.com, which list Hershey's chocolate syrup as GFCF. However, checking the bottle, I see the kosher symbols OUD, and as far as I know (from reading online), D means contains dairy. Hmmm...anyone know if this is okay? I don't see how so many sites, especially gfcfdiet.com, could be wrong. Maybe I'm missing something. ![]() If you see the word PARVE on a (kosher) product, it should be dairy, (but read the label also). If you're looking for a good butter substitute you can try Earth Balance and also Fleishman's margarine. Both are PARVE kosher. Thanks Grammy. I do have the Earth Balance butter ![]() The issue with the Hershey's chocolate syrup is that numerous reliable websites list it as being GFCF, but it clearly has a "D" on it, and I read that if a product has a D, it contains dairy of some sort. So I don't know how this syrup could be okay for GFCF diet
OK, I may have stumbled upon an explanation here. I found this explanation on a cookie website, so it does not necessarily mean it is true for Hershey's, but here it is:Question: What does the "OUD" stand for on the cookies? Answer: The "OU" part of the kosher mark on our cookies designates that these products, including the facility that they were produced in, are certified by Orthodox Union. Since butter (a dairy product) is in some of our products, the entire facility is designated as a "dairy" facility. Kosher law mandates that everything made on equipment that makes products containing dairy/milk will be designated with the "D", even if there are no dairy/milk ingredients used in that product. This means that many of our non-dairy products will carry the "D" designation even though they contain no dairy ingredients. So, if this IS the case for Hershey's chocolate syrup, then maybe they have to put the D on there because they make other items with milk in the same facility. But couldn't it still be an issue because there could be some contamination from shared equipment? ![]() Yes, there could be some contamination but it would be very small and probably not make much difference. My girl can't have have it due to being on the Low-oxalate diet but if she could, I would use it sparingly anyway due to high sugar content. Thanks Bonbon
