SSI

We evacuated for Hurricane Rita.  It was just too dangerous of a situation to stay here with the kids.  We live in a flood plain and I wasn't taking any chances.  We went north to Monroe and stayed in a motel for a week.  Brendon didn't handle that very well.  He would wake up every three hours screaming.  He does not adjust well to change.  He's a great kid though.  He has the biggest blue eyes you've ever seen.  When we go out that's the first thing anyone ever comments on.

Here in CO they look at the parents finances before they will approve a child for SSI.

Jacob just got approved for SSI, but at the same time they cancelled his medicaid. So the $510 a month he gets in SSI will go to the $400 a month in co-pays that medicaid was covering. Seems kinda futile. *sigh*

I love Louisiana, but it's not so great right now.  There are lots of displaced families here that are struggling to survive.  I've had an appointment with a developmental pediatrician that I've had to reschedule 4 times now because there is no affordable motel space in Baton Rouge where this doctor is.  I've stood in water rationing lines at walmart several times now to get nursery water for my kids.  The area we're in is beautiful and historic.  I am proud to say that I live in the oldest permanant settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase Territory.  I live in a town called ********** and we have the Christmas festival comming up soon.  Rhosyn38657.4028125

No I Haven't seen that movie.  It sounds very nice.

It's very sad what the weather is doing.  It's so tragic.  I can't even imagine any family living through that never mind with a speical needs child.

i don't know  if your son is autistic but i know in pa it is a medical diagnosis and a child can  get ssi with it and they can not look into your finances.Really, Massachusetts is such a pain to deal with.  I would think with his disabilities that there would be no question.  Alex has characteristics of autims/PDD but is not diagnosed with it.  He does the flapping and stuff like that.I guess it's different here in louisiana.  The average income here for a 4 person family is probably less than 20,000.  I applied for SSI in July for Brendon.  He was approved conditionally at the end of August and his final approval was a week ago.  He will get it for 2 years and then there will be a reevaluation.  He qualifies for 500 a month with our income.Wow, I want to move to Louisiana!  500 a month, I would be on cloud 9 with that.  Our lives would be so different.  My husband might actually get to spend time with his family or maybe I wouldn't have to run out the door when he's walking in.  Good for you!  A peice of advice, don't move to MA!  One of my friends was getting SSI for her son and they were only getting 250 a month!!!!!

It sounds like you guys get a LOT of stuff for ASD in PA!  (Someone else was saying in another thread that they get 20 ABA / week paid for in PA.)  You're so fortunate - it's not like that here in GA.

Ansley has a med. dx of autism but we don't qualify for SSI due to our income.  We are still waiting on an answer from the Deeming Waiver app. we submitted in May - I've heard they're denying people right and left, so we're not getting our hopes up for that.

As some of you may be aware that my son is 5 and is non verbal and not mobil and is severly globally delayed, I can't get SSI for him.  I have been trying for maybe 4 years now.  We do not get rejected medically but finacially.  Now, let me tell you, my husband works maybe 50 hours a week and I work 2 part-time jobs at night.  Money is so tight that we haven't even paid our Ocotober mortgage!!!!!!!  So how they can say there is no financial need there is beyond me.  It just ticks me off, I don't understand.  When Alex was born I was working a full time job, then changed jobs to a part time position so I wouldn't have to keep taking time off for his doctor appointments.  At that time I was making $40,000 a year, now going going from making $40,000 a year which was about 19.00 an hour to nothing...then to making at one job $6.75 and the other $11 an hour is a BIG difference!  We have gone to a lawyer and was told there was nothing they could do to help!  I just don't get it, so for rambling on about it but it just really blows my mind.  Any suggestions??????humm...when Brendon qualified for SSI he was automatically qualified for medicaid.  When a child here is proven to be disabled and able to receive benefits they will get medicaid automatically even if their income precluded them from actually receiving money.  I have a friend who's a teacher and her husband works offshore.  They make great money for this state.  They had a baby last year that has to be on a vent.  He qualified for SSI but doesn't receive benefits because they make too much money.  He did get medicaid though. Rhosyn38651.4046296296We have private insurance so I wonder if the SSI money sent us over the limit for medicaid? I can't get in touch with my caseworker so I have no idea what is going on or why they cancelled it but it really upsets me. I had hoped to use part of his SSI for therapy toys and needs and leave the rest for his future. Oh, they told me that too. I had planned to take what we were going to save out of Jacob's account and purchase savings bonds for him. I guess I should have been more clear. :) The gentleman at the SSI office said that was ok to do.SSI works differently in different states apparantly lol.  I am not allowed to save Brendon's SSI payments for the future.  IF I accumulate more than $2000 in savings they will cut off his benefits.

Hi, I live in PA. I recieve SSI for 2 of my daughters who are on the spectrum.  I can't work due to there disabilities and therapy and childcare.

We also recieve Medicaid for them and it covers all of their therapy and wrap-around-services.  We don't have to pay for any evaluations or any other therapy.  It wasn't any easy process, was denied 3 times for my oldest daughter and finally after a few years, they did their own test, using their own doctors and determined that she is disable.  What the hell took them so long.

It was easier for my 4 year old Emily and she was approved 2 month after I filed for her.  I feel that if our children deserve it, they should recieve it no matter if their parents work or not. It should be based on their disabilities, not their parents income.

I was just their 2 days ago, appling for my Lily.  She is also on the spectrum and was told to apply by the therapist.  I wish I could go back to work, but I have to be here for therapy and school meetings and etc..

I couldn't even afford childcare and yes I would lose all the benefits including medical.  So for that alone, I have to stay home and take care of my children.  I don't know how you all pay for their therapy, I couldn't afford it even if I were working.  I am greatful that here in PA once our children are approved, they get medicaid and it covers everything.  I would be lost and so would my girls if this was the case.

My son recieves SSI and it is based on income (mine, his father's child support to me, and his stepfather-my husband! Heck it isn't even his biological child!). We have a review every 6 months or so!!! We are in KY and he was granted Medicaid as soon as SSI approved him. He will loose Medicaid when he looses SSI. As I am a student set to graduate in December, when I go back to work, he will loose SSI. His checks are only about $120 a month anyway, so that isn't really an issue---but loosing Medicaid will kill us. He has private insurance through his dad, but they don't cover much.

All I can say is ...I feel ya. About someone saying you make too much for something and you're like...I can barely pay my mortgage and I've had some of the same clothes since highschool because I can't spend money on myself! UGH! It's frustrating! Actually we were doing quite well financially for awhile this year and it was almost to the point where I could splurge just alittle here and there (mcdonalds once in awhile, buy a new pair of pants, etc). Then dh lost his job over his back problems. And you know how good unemployment is. So now we're struggling and I hate that places use GROSS income! Who the H-E-double L ever sees their GROSS income I ask you?!

Amber

Here in Texas, you have to qualify by disability/medically and financially.  But once you qualify for SSI, you are automatically on Medicaid.  They also have different types of medicaids here (which is silly, but some only cover dr's visits while others cover therapy and equipment) and the type you get with the SSI covers everything.

I'm so sorry that you are having such a tough time right now!  I will definitely keep you in my prayers!

Blessings~shae:)
