GF/CF diet improves constipation??

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

My son has been chronically constipated since birth. I was told by a GI that J only having 1 BM a week was probably the norm for him. He continued to ignore my child's issues. J had an upper GI done last month and they found stomach ulcers and duodenitis (inflammation of the small intestine) and the GI simply said "Continue the Prevacid 15mg that he's been taking (Since November!!) and that should heal the ulcers."  He'd been on the Prevacid for months before the procedure so I felt that just continuing his dosage would not be enough and they were not helping to solve the problem, so they were fired. We have an appt with a new GI in a few weeks. I changed his diet to GF/CF and took him completely off of Soy milk b/c we were never completely sure if he outgrew the MSPI and he certainly cannot tolerate dairy products. Since the switch, my son has been having BMs every other day, they seem to be less painful for him, and they are no longer extremely foul smelling. Has anyone noticed a relation with the diet changes? I'm hoping that it is related so that his gut can finally begin to heal.Absolutely! That has been the most noticeable physical change since we
went GFCF. After about six months (we also do digestive enzymes) his
poops were normal. I think its just about the best argument in favor of
GFCF. Regardless of all the other theories, which have been met with
opposition by doctors, it helps the GI tract get back to normal, and if you
feel better, you can think and communicate better.

I am so happy to read this!!! Praise the Lord!

Another yes here.  My DS's constipation left when we got him on the diet, and it hasn't come back since! It also improved my sons.
He was on RX miralax at the time and it was not helping.  We were having to give him enemas and he was severly impacted often.  It literally disappeared within 2 days of going off milk.  (he ended up with horrible gut bowl sandy poop probs about 4 months later and then we went of gluten, and hes had a healthy gut since)
Sevenup, are all your children your natural children? I am just wondering
because the girl in the middle has lighter hair.Half are adopted, including the lighter haired girl.
The youngest girl on the left is my biological daughter and she has hair that is just as light.
a few weeks after we took away gluten he started pooping like a large horse! 4 times a day for a while, but absolutely no diarea, more towards the other end. I think it was old constipation that finally came out! He even clogged the toilet, no one has ever done that before.. and he´s four! Since then all has been normal for the most part. Thats awesome hes normal now.
You know it is actually within "normal" range to eliminate after each meal.  ;)  Wish I haven't had to read up so much on poop!

It's a really weird topic to know so much about, isn't it?

Just thought I'd mention that we had a dietary infraction recently (DS got into some regular peanut butter crackers and ate 4 or 5), and the constipation came back for a couple of days.   Definitely not a coincidence!

My 3 1/2 year old son has been on the GFCF diet for about three weeks now. For most of his life he has battled constipation until now. The diet it seems has loosen up his bowel movements. But it seems too loose now. And I am finding very small bits and pieces of undigested food in it. It smells horrible and he has been having some painful and very bad smelling gas. I am not sure if this means the diet is working to detox him or if I should remove Soy now. Anybody have an idea or suggestion? Thanks

Remove soy no matter what - it's chemically very close to casein and gluten, and kids, especially boys, don't need the phytoestrogens.

It sounds like he may well be detoxing - there may also be other issues that you just haven't addressed yet, like yeast.

Yeah, I figured I would end up removing the soy. I have already switched to Hemp milk and Almond milk. I used some soy flour in the first batch of chicken nuggets I made for him.....but this last batch I used Bob's Red Mill All-purpose gf flour mix. I even pureed some carrots and mixed them in with the ground chicken. Worked like a charm. So now i guess it's soy to take out.

I have wondered about it being Yeast.....if it's yeast. I guess that means I have to remove yeast from his diet???? And sugars right? I am still so new to using diet as treatment.

Yep, remove yeast, simple sugars (and complex carbs too in some cases), get him on a good probiotic, and talk to a DAN if you're able to see about getting him on an antifungal.  A regular ped may do it, though most are reluctant to do anything off the beaten track.

Above all, try not to get overwhelmed.  Focus on one dietary change at a time, and it will eventually feel like second nature to you.  Do you have any books on it yet?  My current favorite is the Kid Friendly ADHD Autism Cookbook.  It has a good section in the front explaining some of the specifics of the diet and a lot of good recipes.

Yes I just bought that cookbook and I am reading it now. Also I have a book called "changing the course of Autism" by Bryan Jepson. But it's a bit over my head in some places. I am trying to get some financial help from the state (GA) but I am having trouble getting help. So far I have been turned down by Medicaid and Peachcare....I reapplied to Peachcare only to have them give me the run around and they aren't very helpful. I finally talked to a social worker today and she gave me a couple of other places I can try. So wish me luck there. There is a DAN! doctor in the same county that I live in. Should I go ahead and contact the doctor? I don't know if there will be a waiting list or what. I get so frustrated with it all sometimes.
