I know there are some people on here from the Pottstown Area, and got a few wonderful ideas, unfortunitly I lost the thread, so I don't remember what they told me. I'm a former WIEAP therapist, who is trying to start an Autism class at the Pottstown YMCA. The YMCA doesn't believe in advertising this program, so if I want a chance of making this work, I have a lot of work to do. What I'm looking for is ideas on who I can send the blurb below to, and include my name, phone number, & the Y's number in order to try and get this class off the ground. I've had a few people stumble on to it by dumb luck, but the one moved, and another was unable to afford the cost. Since I don't have any kids, I'm also looking for a way to send it to local schools, OJR, Pottstown, Pottsgrove, any others???, but not sure of who I can contact and not end up coming off like a complete idiot or stalker or something. My other problem is I'm fairly new to the area (2.5 years), so I have no clue as to if/where support groups are, therapy centers, things like that. So I'm sorry this post is so long and jumbled (just finished 12 hour backshift), but I want to get this out since I know schools start letting out in May. Thanks for any help I get, and feel free to copy the "flyer" below and send it to anyone you may know. Autism Aquatic Therapy Has you child been diagnosed with the Autism Spectrum Disorder or PPD? Than this is the class for them. Interactive Aquatic Therapy based on the Lovaas method, or ABA Therapy. Class time involves games, & group activities, designed to encourage social interaction, and learning with some basic swimming skills in a fun supportive environment. Class size is limited to ensure lots of one on one time and promote group interactions. Non-verbal students welcomed. If there is enough interest multiple levels will be offered based on swimming and ability levels in the fall. A social skills water play time class may be added from 6:30-7 if enough interest exists for this. Currently Summer classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday 7- 7:30 pm during the following weeks: June 22-25 July 6-9 July 20-24 Aug 3-6 Aug 10-13 There is also a two day introduction to what this class is like being offered Aug 24 & 25 Times TBD You could try and contact the CCIU http://www.cciu.org and also try Brenda Eaton with the CCIU she is the autism coordinator BrendaE@cciu.org Have you tried advertising it with Parents Source?? http://www.parentssource.com also try http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/asaphilly/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NAA_PA/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/TALKASAPhilly/ Thanks for the help, now to start seeing who I can get emails off to.If you have a flyer, I will give it to my son's school. You could mail it to me or I could pick it up at the Y. That would be awsome, can I pm it to you?I got it. I'll print it out and give it to them. Thank you so much! Now my only worry is I might have more kids than room with teachers if people really sign up, but I'd happily have that problem. Much easier to add classes than to keep offering ones that no one wants. This is a great idea! I love that kids who are non-verbal are included as well. I don't live in pottstown, but i know many people who do. I will pass this along. I realize the end of the school year is here, and the timing is very bad to be sending out extra emails, so I do apologize ahead of time. After I received a phone call, it was determined that there was an error in the way the program booklet that is sent to every YMCA member & the computer was set up. The ages that were in the computer are for the begin to swim class was for ages 6-8, however the autism class is for children 4-10. As of today the error has been fixed, so for anyone who was unable to sign up due to an age issue should be able to register online now. The current offering dates have also been reduced due to "lack of interest", and are correct as published in the book. SO long story short the current dates for Autism Aquatic Therapy class at the Pottstown family YMCA are: Session 1: June 22-25th Ages 4-10 7:00-7:30 pm Session 2: July 6-9th Ages 4-10 7:00-7:30 pm Session 3: August 3-6 Ages 4-10 7:00-7:30 pm The cost still remains the same: $16 for members & $28 for non-members per session, with a limit of 4 students per session. Please let me know as soon as possible if there are any other issues as people are trying to register. Thank-you very much for you time & interest. Liz Konen ekone073@hotmail.com (920) 517-8023 I wish we lived near you my son is an excellent swimmer and WAS on the swim team however, this year he made little to no progress and now hates swimming. He had a substitute coach who yelled at him for not listening...I think this is what did him in. |
