going for a checkupOne of the most important hints I wanted to add, is to make the appt first thing in the morning, or the first afternoon appointment. Work with the staff at the drs office, and ask them when the best time for appts are. If you need to, take something that comforts your child, although I find Zach refuses all his favorite things when he's somewhere he doesn't want to be. I always take a container of water, and a small snack. I know many drs offices will frown on that, but it has really helped us at times. Generally staff are understanding once they learn a little bit more about your child, and will work with you to help keep your child calm. It really does improve over time, my problem isn't that my ds is scared now, but rather he loves to turn off all the lights in the waiting room, and run exploring thru the building. Fortunately, we have very understanding office staff. Good luck. My son's had the same pedi since he was about two, and he still cries and gets agitated everytime we go to the office. They turn off the lights, let us take a room that has a large window in it, if it's available and not occupied by another patient, and we almost never have to spend much more than five minutes in the waiting room...and still, he screams, no matter what. Nothing we've tried so far has worked, either, he's just really anxious the second we head back to the exam rooms.
Hi My son who is three years screams and cries such a lot when we go to the doctors. I dread going to see the pedi, my husband and I have to hold him for the doctor to do the checkup and he starts crying and gags and throws up sometimes Thanks UV We had the same problem. We were lucky in that our son really didn't get sick that often. He had a total meltdown at a shots appointment when he was about two. He crawled under a long table after his shots and cried. He acted like a wounded animal. It was so sad. He does just fine now at age 11 and has been for several years now. It may take a while but you should find that it gets easier. Could you call your doctor and see if there is an alternative site to give the check up. I realize that doctors don't do house calls these days but I'm wondering if there might be a neutral place that isn't as scary. We had an awesome pedi who would turn over his stethiscope (sp) to our little ones as soon as he would walk in the room. It was a real ice breaker. He would always ask permission to use it too. If he was going to check their ears, he would hand them the instrument to play with first. Then he would ask for it back and ask to look in their ears. We sure miss that doctor!Good luck. My son isn't fond of the doctor either (is any kid?? LOL). His docs know him well after several years, and make sure they do NOT wear a white coat when they enter his room. They show him all the instruments and play with him a bit before they examine him, and try very hard to make it a game. I also tell Nicky over and over on the way that the doctor will not hurt him, only help him. I probably say it at least 50 times until he starts to repeat me. Your child is still young ... trust me that it will get easier as he gets older. my mom say i allways seem tence or nervious even though i like him .but we dont like being touch there diff lighting strange smells so anything could upset him .what about a weighted vest to were till the excam that might help him with any angizy he may be having .when i take my dog to the vet he all ways starts having an angiuzty acttak even though he know his dr he had her since a newbiee but something there sets him off .so i try to hold his milde an sqush him while we are waiting to give him some deep persure seem to help him realx some .\ |
