Hi Everybody, I finally made it after months of being very skeptical.... But i still don't know if i should go ahead with this one in particular because i had a very bad feedback form one mom who saw him. Here's my story: My son will trun 4 in two weeks, he cam a long way and he is what we call "high functionning" he was diagnosed PDD-NOS but he is very hyper and it is difficult to have him follow directions, listen, sit still, could be agressive and doens't deal well with frustration or emotions, has anxieties....But he is very high cognitively. I tried already on my own for about 4 months the GFC diet and i didn't see a lot of results but i saw a big result when i took off the diary or at least i am trying to avoid it as much as i can! Because he is hyper he is recommending first to start this diet and then in a month he will order the testing (blood, urine, stools) - No sugar at all - No white flour only whole grains wheat flour - No juices, - Veggies (but doesn't want to eat any!) - No bananas but he eats only bananas, oranges and pears... - gLUTIATHONE precursor - Bach remedy for anxiety - Epsaum salt bath - Fish oil to continue and my regular vitamins complements for kids from lil'critters The problem i have is i don't know if he gets enough calcium and because he is already very picky if this diet is suitable for him. And the feedback i received from the other mom who told me he is a quack...kind of devastated me! It cost me $450 for this visit and my insurance didn't cover it! She told me that the testing he had ordered for her son were not interpretated well and he told her that her son was not autistic and he is! Should i go see another one? My husband who doesn't believe at all this approach will kill me! Please help,,,,. I would try his suggestions. It wont hurt. Also for calcium try rice, almond or cocunut milk. You can also give a brown rice protein powder and a multivitamin. As for going to another doctor, that's completely up to you. I would not base my opinion off of one mother's opinion though. Have you googled your dr? See what comes up? I would absolutely call the doctors office and ask for at least 10 or so references/current patients and then follow up. How does your husband want to handle things?
- No sugar at all - No white flour only whole grains wheat flour - No juices, - Veggies (but doesn't want to eat any!) - No bananas but he eats only bananas, oranges and pears... - gLUTIATHONE precursor - Bach remedy for anxiety - Epsaum salt bath - Fish oil to continue and my regular vitamins complements for kids from lil'critters
This is actually pretty healthy. -By "no sugar" does he mean sweeteners, or also fruit? -The whole grains thing is VERY good for your son, processed grains are very nutrient deprived. -Juice often robs children of very important vitamins and minerals because it fills them up with empty calories. (aka, they would get a lot more healthy stuff out of eating by eating an apple instead of apple juice) -Bach remedy for anxiety- I know two people who love it, we tried it and noticed no difference BUT I haven't tried it in my kids because if they need something I use Calms Forte from the health food store because we had already tried that. -Epsom Salt Baths are SOOOOO relaxing and enjoyable. You should try it! -What about adding a liquid or chewable calcium since calcium is a concern of yours? Getting your son to increase his variety in diet now will benefit him for the rest of his life nutritionally speaking. It actually sounds like a pretty good start to me. I wouldn't take just one parent's word on the matter - read up on the subject so that you know what's out of line and what's not. If you're worried about calcium, you can always supplement it. If you have the means, it certainly can't hurt to see another DAN, but I'd really start with some reading and research - it can go a long way toward putting your mind and ease and maybe towards convincing your DH that this is worth doing. Those recommendations are very modest, and sound like he's taking a small first step toward getting your son healthy. The only recommendation that would be considered in the realm of possible quackery is the Bach flower remedy, because it's Homeopathy. But, this is something you can try without any risk at all to your son. The people who argue against Homeopathy do so because Homeopathy is based on diluting substances in water, and they argue that the remedies are no better than water. If Homeopathy works for you, then great, if it doesn't, then you haven't done anything more harmful than giving your son water. The recommendations of cutting out sugar are usually coupled with a recommendation to cut out artificial colorings. In Europe, there's been a lot of research backing up the theory that artificial colorings increase hyperactivity in children. Cutting out sugar and artificial colorings will not hurt your child, and are absolutely not quackery. The doctor may be asking you to stop banannas precisely because he's eating so many. People develop immune responses and sensitivities to foods they eat too much. As for veggies, soups are a great way to get kids to eat vegetables. You might ask if you can start with a vegetable/fruit juice mix, and see if your son will accept it. I really love V8 fusion for this reason, and there are low-sugar Fusion juices. But, that might not work because of the juice. I don't know. You might also try things like carrot bread and sweet potato pie for vegetables. The glutathione precursor is for de-toxification. The Epson salt baths are for sulfur and magnesium. The fish oil is an excellent recommendation, and if very mainstream, not at all quackery.
Sounds like a normal first appt to me. After test results are in you will probably get a whole new list of supplements, etc. that are suggested. We started the MB12 shots at our first visit, the GFCF diet and Cod Liver Oil, after getting the test results we got our list of deficiencies. I can understand how this would seem overwhelming to you. I think you should do all that he asked you to do and see what happens. Don't give up too easily--give it a few months of following it strictly and you will likely have a calm little guy! A calm, high functioning boy who can sit still and learn and cooperate. It really can happen! We have also recently started on the biomedical track. At our first apt. the DAN sat down with us and wanted to hear all about our dd and why we wanted to start the DAN protocol and what we hoped to achieve by doing so. Our dd just recently turned six. She is on the mild side of asd and not too hyper. We were sent home w/the stool and urine collection kit to send off. A few days later we received a mailing of his recommendation for the gf/cf diet, suggested reading material, receipes and the suggestion to start two different vitamins and the Omega Oil. He knew that we hestitant to begin any diet without first receiving some type of proof that she did have an intolerance to any certain type of food. We did recieve her testing results and it did show she had high casein peptides but she had a normal reading on her gluten. She has next to no beneficial bacteria and an overgrowth of yeast. So we will be starting Nyastatin to combat the yeast, probiotics to increase the good bacteria, remaining on the vitamins and omega. We are slowly eliminating her dairy and subsituting non-dairy which is easier said then done. He suggested that you do this at your own pace but once a food was elminated to elimate entirely. This approach is very expensive there is no two ways about it. So I certainly understand your angst over the decision and his suggestions. I would suggest to proceed and see what the results show from your son's testings. good luck- ttfn I also wouldn't take one mother's opinion as the absolute truth as I can guarantee that every doctor/therapist in the world has had at least one unhappy patient, that's just life.If you're really concerned, research the DAN! doctor a bit more. As Shandalyn1 says, google him and ask for references, just to ease your mind. As far as the "quackery" is concerned, many people think that anyone who practices "alternative" medicine is a quack! |
