Dari-FreeExcuse me for butting in here, Bon, b/c I know nothing about Dari-Free or how much it costs! Just wanted to let you know that I've heard from people that do the GFCF that rice milk is actually NOT cassein free. I just thought I'd let you know - but you probably know that already. We don't do the GFCF w/ Ansley, but we did try it for a while - so I have a little experience with it, but not a whole lot! Just thought I'd give you a heads up - sorry again for butting in! Someone said this is cheaper than rice milk but when I figured it out, it came to about $5 a gallon. Am I buying it in the wrong place? Where is the best place to buy this?I don't mind if you wanna butt in hmmm Now i heard that a certain brand of rice milk was not dairy free...hmmmm...can't remember...but didn't know that ALL of it was not... anyway, I only used it at the beginning utnil the DariFree came in....but now she is almost out so need to order... Shhh don't tell Jadengrace--but DF is made from POTATOES...ssshhhh.... Rice milks are GFCF, except for a few brands that are not gluten-free because they are sweetened with malt, which is usually made from a gluten source. You have to read the labels carefully. I have not heard of any rice milks containing a dairy/casein source and we've been GFCF for three years, going on four. However, I suppose, depending on what part of the country you are in, there may be a rice milk that contains some form of dairy/casein. You are better off not using a rice milk substitute anyway because they are devoid of any nutritional value and are only empty calories. They're good for cooking/baking, but that is about it. The Dari-Free at least has some nutritional value to it and it comes in chocolate - what could be better? We use DF here, too, and have for years. It is cheaper in the long run because there is no waste (you can mix it as you need it and it stores well) and you can purchase it in bulk. We don't use that much, so I only buy the cartons by the case (6 cartons to a case), which lasts us about a year. I get a 20% discount for buying it by the case. If you buy the big 25 lb. box, it is much cheaper that way, but that would last about 5 years here. If you purchase your DF directly from the company, it is more expensive than if you purchase it from a local HFS if the HFS gives you a case discount. If buying directly from Vance (http://www.vancesfoods.com/home.html), it works out to $1.39/quart if you purchase by the carton, $1.28/quart if you purchase by the case, and $1.13/quart if you purchase by the 25 lb. box. Costs will vary depending on what the HFS charges and if they give you a case/bulk purchase discount or not. HTH, Vic |
