World Autism Awareness Day April 2

Hi, There are several good ideas posted on the "Hang out With Friends" forum of this board under a thread about Autism Awareness Day/Month. You may pick up some ideas there. Also, I think it wouldn't hurt to contact the newspaper asking they do a special section on that day. If they ask to print your daughter's name or photo, simply explain the desire for confidentiality at this point in her life. If they won't do the story, at least you have tried. They would be more likely to run a story if you can come up with official statistics for your country regarding how many children are affected, whether cases are on the rise, etc., and provide the references. Also, any other pertinent information you would like the community to know or understand, such as which services are typically provided and why, the driving distance from your town to those particular service providers or doctors, etc. Just anything to help garner a greater understanding about autism would be great, especially if you are able to provide the paper with "official" information that they can track and quote.

Just my opinion and thoughts on it. I'm glad you want to do something to raise awareness, and I'm sorry for the lack of services available. I, too, live in a small town, and have faced similar issues on that front.

Good Luck

Hello,

Looking to do something small scale to bring Autism Awareness to my town.  I live in Sweden and there is nothing going on here.  Absolutely nothing...

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do?  I have a young daughter with HFA and she is overlooked as just a typical child practically every day here in our town.  SO incredibly frustrating and no supports or services for her whatsoever....

I thought about phoning the local newspaper to do a piece on autism, but I am sure they would wish to photograph my daughter for it and I do not know if my daughter would want that at to be made public in her later years since she is only 7 now...

Any advice?

Have you checked with the Swedish autism society?  The autism society here in Norway did a little bit last year, but we had pretty short notice and it's hard to find time for everything (board members have the same everyday challenges with their children as everybody else).

The board in my region sent out a press release.  We were also afraid that they'd want to take pictures of our kids, but we got very little reaction to our press release.  Only one newspaper printed it (out of about 20 that received it).

The autism society president appeared on a morning talk show, too.

Good luck trying to generate some interest.  Even hanging up some information on the bulletin board at the grocery store is better than nothing.

P.S.  Here's the link to our press release in Norwegian, if you want to use some of the text by translating it to Swedish.
