agitation and aggression

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

ho there just wondering if any parents have noticed that their child had a negative reaction to lovan/prozac.
my son is 7y has been on 20mg lovan for 4 months with increasing agitation and agression.
he is currently going only 2 hours to mainstream while his aide is there due to his behaviour.
he threatens, hits, kicks and bites and not forgetting foul language.
this is his second year of school and it has been a bad start. last year up until mid oct he was a model student.
my son has always been mild mannered, never aggressive like he has been the last few months.
his peaditrion suggested some kids hve reactions, adverse while on lovan even after 4 months.
just some advice from anyone would be good.
thanks
My DS(not ASD) had a horrible reaction to prozac.  He now has a dx of bipolar disorder (can be ASD & bipolar).  He was on it for 6 months before he was hospitalized for suicidal behavior.  He was 6.

Behaviors reported by parents in children diagnosed with bipolar disorder may include:

  • an expansive or irritable mood
  • extreme sadness or lack of interest in play
  • rapidly changing moods lasting a few hours to a few days
  • explosive, lengthy, and often destructive rages
  • separation anxiety
  • defiance of authority
  • hyperactivity, agitation, and distractibility
  • sleeping little or, alternatively, sleeping too much
  • bed wetting and night terrors
  • strong and frequent cravings, often for carbohydrates and sweets
  • excessive involvement in multiple projects and activities
  • impaired judgment, impulsivity, racing thoughts, and pressure to keep talking
  • dare-devil behaviors (such as jumping out of moving cars or off roofs)
  • inappropriate or precocious sexual behavior
  • delusions and hallucinations
  • grandiose belief in own abilities that defy the laws of logic (ability to fly, for example)

one of the dot points above which have coincided with his increasing behaviour problems is weight gain in particular eating alot of bread ie carbs.

defiance of athority ie. teachers.

impulsive even more so now

all these sseem to have been after being on the 20mg for 3 months.

quite a few other behaviours as above.

my peadiatrition has suggested lowering the dosage.

thankyou for your response and i will have alook at the website.

I dont know what Lovan is tho im assuming its the same thing as prozac? My sons on prozac and it has done wonders for him! He is dxed with bipolar-NOS/mood dis.

I have heard that kids with bipolar dis shouldnt take antidepressents because it can cause mania or worsening of the bipolar. I have also read and been told by my sons docs that if they are put on an antidepressant they absolutely need to be on a mood stabilizer as well at the same time so it doesnt cause mania/worse symptoms. So far my son has tolerated it well, his aggression, moodiness, irritability, ocd/rigidness, depressive behavior etc are all down!

You should def talk to ur sons doctor about either taking him off or adding a mood stabilizer (not sure how theyd introduce it tho) and it could be an adverse reaction for sure or just making his bipolar symptoms flare up. Talk to the doc, a good doc will know whats best, obviously hes not tolerating it well somehow.

Good luck and i hope things calm down and work out for ur little guy.

he hasn't actually been dx with bi polar but beleive me with genetics from both sides could be a real possibility.

i will definatly talk to his peadiatrition about the possibility of bi polar for sure.

or even a lower dose of prozac (lovan is a generic). or something else.

thanks for your time and sharing your knowlege.
