anyone here supplement Vitamin D

I mean above the RD of 400 IU per day?

My internist now says 2000 IU per day for adults, does anyone have a medical recommendation for kids?

We are supplementing a minimum of 4000 IU's a day for every one in our home, including my 4 year old PDD-NOS who is at 6,000 IU's daily now per our DAN.  I started him out at 1000 IU's, then upped to 2,000 IU's, then to 3 and then to 4.  After six weeks at 4000 IU's and lots of gains, we did blood work to check his Vitamin D levels (we actually checked levels for all of us) to make sure he wasn't getting toxic.  His levels were actually on the low side of normal so my ped faxed the test results to our DAN and when we consulted with him he said to go ahead and go to 5000 for two weeks, and then to 6000 IU's and we will retest in another six weeks to make sure his levels are within normal range.

Hope this helps...I know the 6000 number probably scares the crap out of you, but my kid is literally soaring on vitamin D3 supplementation, and research is supporting the need for much, much more than the recommended 400 IU's daily.

I want to add I would not recommend anyone go as high as 4,000 IU's without the support of a physician to check blood levels (a very simple test ordered through Lab Corp, Quest or any other run of the mill lab), and also to clarify that I am specifically talking about vitamin D3 and not any other type of vitamin D (specifically synthetic vitamin D's). JulieA39889.9144560185We supplement D3 per our neuro.  I know its above the RDA, but not sure how much right now.

I add 1000 IUs of Vitamin D3 to my daughter's Cod Liver Oil every day, but after hearing Julie's story, maybe I should ask her doctor about more.

Julie, what led to the idea of supplementing D3?

Also, I noticed recently that my daughter's rice milk is supplemented with D2. Do you think this is dangerous, considering she drinks 3-4 cups a day?

Vitamin D is supposed to support immune function and prevent autoimmune diseases (which I have -- thyroid and diabetes).  But I have seen deficiency associated with autism, online ... try googling Vit D toxicity -- not much info is out there on it.

I know fat-soluble vitamins are supposed to be approached with caution, but the only one associated with toxicity seems to be A.
