We are in the process of slowly starting a Casein free diet for dd. Her Gluten peptides were fine. I am wondering is there anytype of subsitution for cheese? She loves cheese. I have been made to understand that just because a product says it's dairy free does not mean it is casein free. Can anyone offer a suggestion? ttfn Go to a health food store and look at cheese substitutes, but you have to read the labels. I eat a lovely almond cheese but it has casein ... there are others that do not, though. Expect to spend big ... what about soy cheese, tastes like cardboard but I guess you'd get used to it.My ds loves Goat cheese. ttfn, I found some type of soy cheese that we tried to use on pizza...sorry to say it was not so great and we just made the pizza without cheese.....we did like the gf pizza crust that we found at the health food store. Thanks everyone. I will definitely check the health food stores out. Foxl, does all almond products contain casein? I just got her some "almond milk" and it didn't list casein in the ingredients but maybe it is there under someother name I'm not familiar with? (I gave it to her this morning and she didn't even notice the difference.) I will try the soy products and see. Rhyssdad- Doesn't goat cheese have casein? I get so confused about this. They should make it plainer on the labels! We shouldn't have to have a "chemistry degree" to be able to make wise choices for our kids. ttfn My son's intolerance test came back highly reactive to cow milk and not at all reactive to goat milk. Of course all of our kids are different. Rhyssdad- Sounds like your son has had the food allergen test which my dd has not had yet. We just got back the peptide test so all I know is the casein was high. Don't know if she would be reactive to goat's milk or not but if not, I'm sure that would be more tasty than the soy cheese. I'm guessing the food allergen test will be the next thing her DAN will want to do. I am dreading that as I know it requires a blood sample and I am not sure how she will react to that but I'm betting not good. Thanks for the help. ttfn I researched and found two "cheeses" that were highly rated for taste and that melt--apparently most won't melt. We've tried them and they aren't too bad, probably would be good once you got used to CF foods. I found them at Whole Foods (local health food market) but they are also available online. One is Follow Your Heart, the other is Galaxy Vegan Rice Cheese. I'm still kinda new at this but from what I understand if it says Vegan is is casein free, otherwise probably not. Thanks twinsohmy- I will check into those. By the way, I love the pic of your dd's. ttfn Yes, Vegan is CF!Some of the soy cheeses have casein in them. Just be sure to read the labels carefully. Thanks Grammy ttfn Our DAN doctor strongly urges against the use of soy in place of casein! You may want to discuss that with your doctor first. Cheese is one thing that I have had no luck with. So unfortunately we just stay away from it :( My daughter is dying for cheese on her hamburger and parmesan cheese on her macaroni! Oh yeah and I wanted to add, that my daughter's bloodwork and testing all came back as normal for gluten as well. However, we took it away and we have seen such a major difference. Recently I gave it back to her, and OH MY GOD did we regress. It may be worth the shot. When we tested my son, I later found out that for a gluten intolerance it isextremely hard to get reliable test results because they only test for gluten- specific allergy, which doesn't account for gliaden, the other gluten strand, or for more minor intolerance. We got some rice cheese and it "melts". It comes in slices like American cheese. It was the only cheese at Whole Foods that didn't have casien in it. We make macaroni with it. Allergy testing for gluten has absolutely nothing do to with the GFCF diet. The GFCF diet has to do with the bodies inability to DIGEST the proteins in milk and wheat, called casein and gluten. They are two completely different issues and should not be confused. Parents, just because you're child tested okay for milk and wheat on an allergy test or an IGG sensitivities test does not necessarily mean that they are capable of digesting the proteins and would not greatly benefit from the GFCF diet. Gonna have to find a "Whole Foods" to see if that rice cheese would work. I think there is a Whole Foods about 40 miles from us. ttfn I went to Whole Foods. The only cheese I found there that didn't have Casein in it was Vegan Gourmet. Even the vegan cheese will have casein in them because according to law they can include casein if it's under a certain percentage. The rice cheese I found at Whole Foods (like Rice Shreds) have Casein listed in the ingredients. I think we are gonna have to do without cheese subs though. I think we will have to end up taking Soy out of my son's diet as well. I'm brand new to GFCF (just started mixing in rice and almond milk with regular milk today) but I went to Whole Foods yesterday and found some vegan rice cheese slices that are GFCF. It is made by Galaxy Nutritional Foods and it says it is new on the package. It says specifically that it is lactose AND casein free -- says it is 100% non-dairy. I have yet to open it, and I'm guessing it probably doesn't taste good, lol, but I'm hoping it will work for a grilled cheese for Katelyn. OH man, I was just there today but didn't bother to look at the cheeses. Since I am taking soy out as well now and the only one I had found without casein, had soy in it. But the ones you have mentioned, Vegan Rice Cheese Slices By Galaxy Foods says that it's soy and gluten free as well as casein free right on the front of the package! This excites me too. I bet my son would love a grilled cheese, too. I will look again next time I go back. Thanks! You're welcome! Yes, it was the only one I saw that said it was free of all of the "bad" stuff
It is really good. My son loves it on grill cheese and mixed in his scrambled eggs. Enjoy.
Awesome, thanks Paws! Katelyn LOVES scrambled eggs with cheese, so that is wonderful to know!

[/QUOTE] That cheese is somewhat hard and dry and don't taste that great eaten alone. I shredded that kind for GFCF pizza, though, and it was fine. (BTW, the GFCF pizza is AWESOME. The recipie is somewhere on this board.) I used Tofutti imitation cream cheese from Whole Foods, and really liked the taste. Thanks, Bluebird! |
