J's grades dropped in math and science this report card, so I hired a tutor. I am kicking myself for not having done it sooner.(What was I thinking, trying to explain polynomial fractions and cellular respiration? I had no clue what I was talking about!) Mrs. P is doing a great job. J meets with her once a week and when he's done, he seems to understand everything. I am so relieved. Hi, I am happy that it worked well for you! Wish you and J a lot more successes. My son is 11 and is also PDD NOS and ADD. We too have come a long way. His major struggle is with communication and he is still struggling with expression / comprehension. I feel burned out now and for the last couple of years, I feel his progress has not been good- the way it was in the beginning. Please let me know what specific things you did with your son that helped him. Mine is close in age and issues so I am hoping it will be help ful to me. Please spare a few minutes, He is attending a social skills group right now. I stopped speech as I was not seeing any improvement, but want to start again. Thanks in advance for your help--Best Regards Great. Hopefully, his IEP classification is Autism. If it's Learning Disability, he can end up without an IEP if he makes too much progress without the District being the ones to put in place lots of help. If he gets tons of help at home, they will not feel the need to put the help in place in school and he COULD end up with an IEP. However, under Autism, he will qualify for help if his social skills or behavior is an issue. Great going with the tutor, though.Tzoya---Actually, J is classified as multiply handicapped. I am not that worried about his losing services because he's been classified for his whole academic career and the only services he's ever given up were the ones I said he longer needed. He has always gotten tons of outside help and lots of in school help, too. Bulldogmom---I would definitely get your son back in speech. J did 3-4 speech sessions per week in school and 4 per week after school from age 5 - 12 1/2. It's not a wonder therapy, but you do see slow and steady progress. We also did Tomatis therapy,Samonas therapy, movement therapy, Fast Forword, multiple social skills groups and Beyond Words in Atlanta, GA. I also enrolled him in a reading comprehension course given by Fordham University. To me, the absolute best thing was the Beyond Words program which teaches PDD kids group dynamics and social comprehension. We saw results after Tomatis, but it is usually for younger kids. Nowadays, J's speech therapist is using an approach that helps kids connect physical gestures with what they intend to communicate. It's pretty neat. I wouldn't worry that you're not seeing progress at the same rate you did in the beginning. The progress a child makes when they are younger is naturally more visible because the types of things they master are things that you notice immediately, like being able to ask for something or being able to write their name. Later on, your child may improve in more subtle ways that you might not be aware of. For example, if he can go from comprehending 30% of a paragraph to 65%, you're still going to feel like he didn't get it, but he will have improved. Thanks toodycat, I see a few things I have not heard about and I will definitely explore them, and also start the speech again!! I really appreciate your help!! Best Bulldogmom---No problem. If you any questions, feel free to PM me. |
