GFCF diet helpHi, Can your child occasionally have food that is not on the GFCF list? Can they have a modified diet where it's mostly GFCF? Just curious because I'm wondering how he will buy lunch at school, go to restaurants, etc.. Thanks, Patty we were told no. My son had to bring lunch from home and if we did go to a restaurant we had to be careful in our selections. No. You have to change your way of life along with the diet. Is it worth it? You bet! This is a hot debate with my grandma, who thinks infractions are fine if its not too much. All the literature says NO. How do you know if the diets working if you are haveing infractions pretty steadily? If you follow it to a T for a long time and then have an infraction that may tell you something. Your son can pack a lunch, There are GfCF things in restraunts. Red Robin is great (if you have one). We get grilled chicken, fries, fruit. There are places he can eat out at. Some people take digestive enzymes with there food when they know they will have an infraction and say it helps. Some people take enzymes exclusivly instead of the diet. We have faithfully been on the GF/CF and egg-free diet since January. We noticed a difference, but it was gradual, and we've been adding a lot of supplements at the same time, so we wondered about this, too. This past weekend, Hunter had a birthday party, and we had pizza for the other kids and a special treat for him. Well, he started crying hysterically because he wanted the pizza, so we let him have it. The next two-and-a-half days were a nightmare. He was completely out of control at home and at school, stimming through the roof and VERY violent. So that was our validation that we were doing the right thing keeping him on the diet, and we're not going to take him off again unless his DAN doctor suggests it as a challenge, like they're going to do with his peanut allergy. I always make lunch for school, and we don't go to restaurants. When we do go somewhere, we always bring food for him. Let your child pick out a cooler at the store and bring it along with you. It's hard in the beginning, but it does get easier as you get used to it. Good luck with it! |
