Washington DC - MD, VA, or the District

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

We're in the beginning stages of making a move to the Washington, DC metro area or perhaps the areas around Baltimore depending on where services are best.  Just looking for advice from those living the experience there.  We also plan to reach out to the local family advocates and regional centers for opinions.  Any thoughts?

We're coming from the San Francisco Bay area and should be moving in May.  For us, it's a move back but this time with our son old enough to begin to understand him as a child on the mild end of the spectrum.

You can do a search for local resources through the links collected here.  You can also find the local autism society chapter and get local information through them.

This site rates private and public schools, but I don't know if there's any information on special education for the schools you're interested in.

Good luck with your move!

I forgot that you can also check the Easter Seals state autism profiles, and see how Maryland and Virginia compare.

We are in Northern Virginia and have found the services to be good.  My son is also on the milder end of the spectrum, but has been getting services since he was 13 months old.  How old is your son?

Howard County, maryland (Columbia, Ellicott City...) Thanks everyone!  Our son is 4 1/2 and has been diagnosed, at least for now, with MSDD, ODD, and sensory integration.Montgomery County, Md. is excellent.  Avoid the District at all costs.Since I don't think my ped will have much for me (he gave me something for a clinic all the way in Richmond) as an idea last year.

I'm in Fairfax county. We are doing Child Find, but any actual recs for developmental psychiatrists/counselors who do diagnosing? I really need to find one that uses our insurance. With such a huge area, I'm finding it impossible to search through my insurance company and when I called it said, "your ped can recommend someone and we'll see if he's on the list." My ped wasn't helpful.
I would go to Kennedy Kreiger in Balitmore.  Its a bit of a trip, but you don't have to go over and over again to the doc who dxs and this is the region's premier location for dx's. Is this a collection of doctors? Off to look. I want to get this undergoing..
Fairfax County Public Schools have an excellent reputation for their autism services in the public schools (they have programs within the schools so the kids can be included for specific classes, teachers have ongoing ABA training, there are behavior consultants that work with each classroom, there are autism specific preschool classes, etc.)

Fairfax County schools in general are very well-known.
You will find a lot of resources in Maryland. Depending on what types of treatment you are looking for, you may want to schedule a meeting with Dr. Stanley Greenspan, developer of Floortime/DIR method. He is located in Bethesda, MD.

Look into the Maryland Autism Waiver program to hire good quality therapists. the program covers between 10-17$ per hour, I heard.

Also, DC and MD have wonderful speech and OT therapists. I recommend Diane Lewis, SLP and Dynamic Development for OT, both in Bethesda MD

Good Luck!
