I haven't been around much lately as free time has been pretty limited! However, things are going well. We had C's annual review last week and were thrilled. He met all of his goals save one, which we'll contine and we set new goals. We will reconvene in May to finalize placement, but the thought right now is that they will bring him back into our district, to his home school. Right now C is in a self-contained class with 12 kids, a teacher and 2 aids. He has been mainstreamed for specials (art, music, PE) since the beginning of the year, and since November he has been mainstreamed in with a regular 2nd grade class for math 1 hour each day. This is his 2nd year in this program. Next year, they are putting together a hybrid program where C and a small group of kids will be in a regular 3rd grade class for part of the day and in a smaller class with a special education teacher for part of the day. I think this will be an ideal program for C and we're very excited about it. It's a huge step forward. Basketball has been touch and go. He has alot of problems in practice, gets easily disregulated and I often have to step in. However in the games he is much better. There have been a few incidents but very mild and he has recovered quickly. He's playing really well and scores baskets in every game. He's learned that he has to pass to other kids if he wants them to pass to him, and best of all, he's accepting it without protest when the ref calls him for something like traveling. Basketball is his toughest sport from a behavior perspective but we're making it through. We started our other son R on vyvance for ADHD over x-mas break and there has been a dramatic improvement in his performance at school. Of course now he's up late every night, but it's a small price to pay. Some of you may recall that I was agonizing about whether to stop or continue private therapy this year. We chose to stop it and it was the best decision we could have made. Killing the therapy means he gets more time each week in the after school care program where he is in the real world mix with regualr kids. This is the best social skills practice in the world for him. It's working out really well. Every once in a while he has a bad day, but for the most part it's good. On Monday there was no school and he was there all day. They did an ice skating field trip and he did awesome. It's hard to believe that the boys turn 8 on Tuesday. This Sunday we're having 25 kids at Pump it Up for their party. Every day C looks at the calendar and informs us how many days until the party and how many days until their birthday. He asked for his own bowling ball with a bag, a remote control helicopter and some wii games. Both kids are really excited. I can't believe they are going to be 8, where has the time gone? We're going to Disney for spring break. I'm counting the days! Work has just been crazy and I really need a break. On the bright side, my business travel won't be as insane as it was last year. I was in Japan again last month but now I don't think I'll have to go again until summer. Hope everyone is doing well! WNDERFUL update, Kristys! I hope it continues this way for you all!Oh that is FANTASTIC kristy! And happy, happy birthday to C and R! My ds turns 8 in June - I can't believe how fast the time has flown either! Although he is in 1st grade (I held him out since he had a June birthday and it worked best for him). We, too, discontinued outside therapy and it has been a great decision. He was able to participate in basketball and wrestling (for a short time until he got a contagious rash from it!) and other outside activities. Which I wouldn't have done for him if he had had therapy - it would have been too much. But, he loves basketball and wrestling and up until now, he had no interest in sports. He is also interested in football - so we may end up getting him into flag football in the fall. Thankfully, one of our neighbors is a coach (and I may end up begging my dh to coach as well). Awesome update - I hope things get less crazy for you soon! And I'm SO jealous about Disney - we want to go soon. I'm hoping for the summer after this one - but not sure we'll be able to swing it. It depends on the job I get next fall when dd goes to school full-time! Have a WONDERFUL time! Good to see you back too! Thanks for the update. Hope the boys have a great birthday! |
