Hello. I'm Linda, dd will be 6 yrs old this summer and has aspergers. My husband is military and we will be moving from South Carolina to Colorado in May and I'm wondering if anyone can advise where the best elementry schools are in that area? I've heard district 20 is good? My husband does not mind a commute (he will be working on Peterson AFB) so we're willing to live in just about any area of COS, right now we've been looking up by the Air Force Academy since that is the district 20 area. I've heard district 49 is decent but they have huge overcrowding issues. Right now my dd is mainstreamed in a transition kindergarten where there are 24 students, 2 teachers & 2 aides. She's doing very well academically but requires a bit more attention than she would get in a regular kindergarten class with only 1 teacher. This is why I am concerned.......I'm worried about her starting 1st grade and kinda falling through the cracks. She does not receive any services at school right now (she has in the past), she does get ABA therapy outside of school. I just want to make sure we choose the right area to live in where she will go to the best school for her. If anyone has any advice, suggestions or personal experiences they could share with me it would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks! Linda Surely someone lives in Colorado??????? lol Linda Did i post this in the wrong place or something? I am really looking for some advice on the school system before we move. I would really appreciate anyone who could take 1 minute and respond. Thank you!!!!! Linda Hi LindaLou, We recently relocated to Colorado, but we live in the Denver metro area. I'm sorry I can't help you with Colorado Springs school information. We have a 14 y/o son with autism, and it took us FOREVER to find a house we loved in a school district we were happy with here.
I'm sorry I could not be more help, but welcome to Colorado! :) Linda,My wife and I just moved here and are getting settled in. There is a huge difference in the schools and it pays to do your due diligence and check them out. Our autistic son is 3 and we looked at the pre-schools and were amazed at the difference btw districts 20, 38 and 49. 38 and 49 were eons ahead of 20 wrt preschool. 49 even does ABA at school. Check into what programs are right for your kiddo and make your house hunting trip a school interview trip. We ended up in 38 and are quite pleased, 49 was a bit more of a drive than I wanted for what seemed to be a marginal improvement over 38's programs. Thanks for this thread. My DH is considering rejoining the AF after retiring over a year ago (I am VERY unhappy about this!), and one place he is considering is the Academy. Our dev ped said medical services in that area are good, but he doesn't know about the schools. Tovarishrob, your post is very helpful! |
