Memantine?

Has anyone used Memantine?  My son't doctor wants me to consider giving it to him.  My apprehension--it's a pharmaceutical drug--that's my biggest one.

From an article: "memantine appears to improve frontal executive functions, including better attention, improved speech expression & decreased perseveration."

What do you suggest?  Has anyone used this?

Thank you for your thoughts.

I looked it up - an Alzheimer's drug (Namenda is most common).  I've heard "they" want to start prescribing for ASD, but I don't personally know anyone who takes it.

Is the dr. a general pediatrician, or a DAN doctor?

casey10739846.8352199074I also looked it up and I find it is interesting that the medication targets the frontal lobe and Executive functioning...let us know if you do try it and what your results are.I have asked our behavioral pediatrician to look this up for us.  DS has come so far on the meds that he takes now.  He's not the same kid he was when I met him.  It makes sense from a science standpoint since the problem with Alzheimer's is the degradation of brain cells and we all know ASD brain neurons don't work the same way.

Yes, my son's doctor is a DAN doctor.  We've only been seeing him for four months (we got a late start down this path as my son just turned 13).  His doctor wants us to start the mb-12 shots with him, which I'm planning on doing.  On concern is-if the mb-12 shots help significantly, how will I know which is which, as we'd just have started this.

Yes--as far as what I've read it doesn't seem like it would harm him.  I'd prefer to see results through methyl B-12, as it's a natural treatment.

I have questions like--would the effects be lasting, or would he only be able to have better frontal lobe funtioning while taking the drug?  Would he need to take it forever?

What I read sounds good, but I don't know if it's healing anything, or making anything work better long-term, vs just while taking the drug.

My son DOES have great difficulty in his frontal lobe & with executive functioning--he's severely dyslexic.  Has communication difficulty.  Sometimes I don't know if certain ways he is is because of dyslexia, or because of (high functioning) Aspergers.

So what it says it does would be targeting areas in his brain which don't work properly.  I don't know, though, if it's only while taking the medicine, vs a healing medication which causes something long-term to occur.

One place said no side -effects.  Another place had some listed.

Thanks for your thoughts.

anyone try Memantine?

Just curious of the results.
