requesting specific teacher?Do we have the right to request a certain Kindergarten teacher at my son's IEP Meeting who has more experience dealing with children with ASD and has a reputation for being more tolerant/patient/inclusive? Unfortunately, I know that most parents at our local public school request this teacher, so I am sure you can ask, but does an IEP meeting request put any weight behind it? Thank you!
IF you can get the entire team to reach a consensus, it does. Our district permits us only to describe the characteristics of a teacher most appropriate for our child, but not to specify the teacher. I'm sure all school districts are different but in ours you can request for kindergarten only. Her having an IEP also helps to carry weight on the decision. I sent a letter to her principal stating the request and reasons why. I asked her preschool teacher to do the same and also the speech and o.t. teachers. My dd's IEP meetings are held at the close of the year so I further stated it was important to have the oncoming teacher present to discuss any concerns with the past teacher. I will plan to do the same for next year. It may work or it may not but I plan to give it a try. |
