Since my son was born with a cleft palate, I have had to advocate for him. With speech, doctors, surgeries, etc. Then when he was diagnosed with autism, I reached out to many local agencies. I found a good school program for him, the BEST developmental pediatrician I could ever ask for. Just recently I found a dentist that not only specializes in cleft kids, but also specializes in special needs kids, including ASD. I have moderated this board (with breaks from time to time), and learned as much as I could, while also raising 2 older boys, being a single mom and working full time. Two weeks ago, one of the agencies I have worked with, to help with my son, offered me a position as a Family Residential Advocate. Tomorrow is my last day as a purchasing agent. I've been doing this kind of job since my early 20's, and I am now 40! I am completely changing my career and my life and I could not be more excited! I start my new position next Wednesday. I will be working with families of children that are in residential homes, helping them stay involved with their kid's lives and education and helping them empower themselves to help their kids. Since this is all new, I will be getting lots of training and be learning so much, which I will pass on to you guys whenever I can. This is an exciting time in my life, and I cannot wait! For once I will wake up in the morning doing something that is real and will help people, and that to me is more important then anything else.
Best wishes as you begin this new chapter in your life ![]() Good luck on your first day. I think you will do wonderful things for everyone you come in contact with. ![]() Congratulations! I hope it goes wonderfully for you! I too have a cleft kid -- my youngest has a lip-alveolus cleft, and will need nasal reconstruction when she is grown. We have 3 cleft teams in this town and I am in the process of switching teams. I have used a dentist (also on our team) who is faculty at a dental school and she has been wodnerful with all of my kids, but she is leaving for a hospital position ... I hope you will have the time and motivation, to continue here! Congratulations! (((hugs))) Let us know how things go!Congrats! How did it go? Great News, I hope you love your new job.PS: My niece was born with a cleft palate and lip. She is doing great, I hope your child is too. She is now 13. PSS: Foxl, I did not know one of your DD has a cleft too. [QUOTE=Loki] Heck, I often forget, myself! Most people never notice ... but ask how she lost her tooth! |
