Mercury in food with corn sweetenersI think this research report is disturbing, even though the authors are not trying to cause hysteria.
Basically, caustic soda is still used to manufacture high fructose corn sweetner, and since it contains mercury, it can cause mercury contamination in foods.
“Mercury is toxic in all its forms,” said IATP's David Wallinga, M.D., and a co-author in both studies. “Given how much high fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered.
Since some people consume a lot of soda-pop, it was a relief to find out that none of the sodas tested had detectable levels of mercury. But other food products did, including products big names like Quaker, Hershey's, Kraft and Smucker's.
What to do?
The report's authors said we quite frankly don't know what impact this food contamination might have on our health and the heath of our children. They recommended avoiding products that had high fructose corn syrup as one of its first-listed ingredients.
On the political level, we need to push for banning the mercury-based technology, like they did in Japan. In 2007 Obama sponsored a bill for phasing it out. Now that he's president, I hope that this concern will make the agenda.
It obviously didn't make the agenda four years ago:
"While the FDA had evidence that commercial HFCS was contaminated with mercury four years ago, the agency did not inform consumers, help change industry practice or conduct additional testing."
