I need help...Thanks for all the help everyone!! Amie, yikes I did pretty bad on those tests too, lol...but I went to our library website and they have quite a few books to help me out...thanks for the suggestion! I got my transcript and I actually did really well, especially in Math and Science, and now I apparently can't even do basic math, lol...I am really one of those people that loses the info once I don't think I am going to use it anymore! thanks again all! And good luck in nursing school Ang!! When I went back to school I went through a College Entry Program which was designed for adult learners. Look to see if a local community college offers something. We did study skills and basic math. It was non credit but the class was small. The also incorporated three other classes that you would use everywhere. There is nothing like taking public speaking with 10 other people. I have also taken quite a few online classes that are very flexible no matter what your schedule. 3am in PJ's if you want! hehe, that's a pretty open ended subject, but anyway... I'm wondering where to start with this and maybe some of you can help me out. I want to go back to school. My background is that I am 34 years old and had 2 years of college right out of highschool...since then I have had a few jobs here and there, but mostly a SAHM...so my education has windled away over the years. I'm pursuing a 2 year degree, somewhere in the medical field, like radiograpy...I've started getting ready for everything so hopefully I can start in the summer. I went to the college website to do some of their practice tests, to kind of get an idea on what classes you should start with.... well this is quite embarrassing, but if I had been taking an actual test, I would have failed every section!!! Let's just say basic math, doesn't mean 2+2=4. So they have these wonderful practice tests, but there is no follow-up on how to actually brush up on these subjects, so you don't completely embarrass yourself when you take the actual placement test. So to end this on going story, lol...anyone have any ideas or websites that they know to help someone get back into the groove of school and help me re-learn all of the basics I have obviously let go over the years? I swear doing those tests was almost enough to scare me out of these "back to school" thoughts! Congratulations on deciding to going back to school that is awesome.I felt the same way at first when I started taking Nursing pre-requisittes 2 yrs ago, can't believe it's been that long it feels like yesterday. It did get to be more manageable and with each course that I took. It really has gotten less intimidating. Today I am starting my 2nd semester of Nursing school. I will see if I can find some websites for the placement tests and post them here for you. A couple I have used if you have a library in the area are Study guide to Compass test and the Idiots Guide to Pre-algebra. This is one online I have used in the past http://www.testprepreview.com/compass_practice.htm. Hope this helps. Good luck going back to school. One thing I would suggest if you are looking at medical is look at getting your CNA or EMT license so you can work in the medical field and see which area you like before you get into it. It's super competitive but there is always a big need. First off, Congratulations for choosing to go back to continue your education.Don't let those tests intimidate you. I took my time to finish school, 24 years from my high school graduation until recieving a BSEET degree from Pitt. I have taken calculus 3 times to finally get a passing grade. It ain't easy. You really have to be able to manage time and to not be overwhelmed with the work. But you must realize that the educators will work with you to help you find your way. Good Luck. Good for you for deciding to continue your education! Is there a technical school or university nearby that has a refresher course for the basics that you could work on before starting the actual course work this summer? I would talk with the admissions office or guidance office of the school that you will be going to, to see if they know of any refresher courses. Congrats on going back to school! You might be able to transfer the credits you got from the 2 years of college after high school so you can use those towards your degree. My mom went back to school a couple years ago to get her Masters. I went back a few years ago and then stopped. I won't go back again lol it's too much for me personally. They wanted me to take the no credit math i said no way lol. Their idea of basic math is algebra yikes! You should start out slow, take 1,2,3 classes, just so you know how you can handle the workload. It is different for everyone. I need good with 2 classes a semester. 3 or 4 was too much for me and i had a hard time, although i passed, my mother had to go in to talk to some of the teachers since i was having a bad time physically and mentally that year. I've decided college is not for me. It's too uncomfortable in the classroom. I admire those of you that go, and especially going back later in life. ![]() ![]() I am 26 and I grauated 9yrs ago. ( I was 17) I didnt go back to school because I was already a mom. I worked a cpl jobs here and there but just like you i am a SAHM. So for the heck of it I took a IQ test. I was littlerly shocked that I had a 124. I couldnt believe it. I went and took 3 others on differnt sights and my lowest score was 114. which is still above advrage. I honestly didnt think I knew that much, but i was always good with logic and math. I took pre calc in High school and got strait A's. I been wanting to go back to school. I decided that i am going to but still not sure what for. I want todo something that will be benificial for my life as an ASD parent and for them. OT is what I am thinking... Anyhow My mother went back to school when I was in 5th grade and just finished about 2 yrs ago with like 7 degrees lol. Good For You for going back and take it easy the basic math in college isnt that bad. I tutored a friend in it about 3yrs ago, she struggles with math and was mad i could do it all without being in school for so long. I know that things come back to me when I attempt to try them again after so long. Good Luck. |
