perfectionism?

My son can get like that. We were told to have a "catch phrase" such as "no big deal" and then just correct the problem and move on. We do ignore if he perserveres. I do talk about the issues at bedtime when he has more time to reflect on the issue. My 4-year-old son, who has ASD, has been getting very frustrated about almost everything he tries to do.  He often drops his crayon, his spoon, or his scissors or isn't able to write his letters to his satisfaction, or he slips, and then he breaks down crying and saying, "I'm not perfect?  Why can't I be perfect?"  He tends to perseverate on these incidents.  We found some library books to help (Regina's Big Mistake, Oops, etc.), and we try to work on his self esteem by praising him for the things he does well.  Our therapists have suggested that the behavior has to do with rigidity and they suggest that we ignore the behavior.  Has anyone been through anything similar?  He does receive OT, ABA, and other therapy to deal with these issues.  Thanks!

My daughter gets awful about it, especially her handwriting and artwork.   I am working on getting her to walk away from it.
