First Autism Group Meeting

Wow.  did I read that right?  You have 7 children, that is amazing.

I am glad you found a group that you feel comfortable with.  I always feel like we are on an island by ourselves.  I haven't went to any of the support groups because I didn't really have time until recently but I know how valuable it would be to be around others who can understand where you are coming from.

Good luck.

Welcome to the board! I am glad you found a support group- I fo to a local FEAT (families for effective autism treatment) meetings where I live in TX and I also am close to many other mom's of the kids that go to my son's school that are autistic. It is so nice to meet other parents (especially moms) who REALLY understand how life is for you- it is NOT the same as just being a mom; having an ASD child is a whole other ball game.

How old are your kids? Are they girls, boys or both? Meeting other parent's who have children similar to your children's ages can be an invaluable resource and a wonderful safe haven to talk to. Fill your life with people who understand- I find that it helps tremendously. PM me anytime if you need to talk- I have not done the GFCF diet, but traditional therapies like OT, ST and ABA with good results. I have one child who is 4 with classic autism. He is verbal (echolalia) and is reading and writing at age 4 but can't tell me anything that he needs- it is very frustrating!

So glad you are here- it is a long, confusing, hard journey but with support it is easier.

Thank you all. You are very kind. My boys both 4 and 2 have autism. My 2 year old is moderate and my 4 year old seems to bounce bank and forth some. I love them so much. They help make me a better person. Not that I was ever a bad person. I also have 5 other children and it takes a toll on them sometimes. My husband and I just do the best we can. They get Speech and OT. The 4 year old also gets ABA. South Carolina just doesn't do as much as we had expected. Thank each of you for your advice and support.
I've been going to a support group for about a year now.  I have also seen the newly diagnosed come in crying and shaking.  A few come in in tears over how the school district took advantage of their trust.  But still it is nice to be in the company of folks who understand and offer advice.  It is also nice to be able to help others out.   A support group can be a bit of sanity in a crazy situation. Dad2Luke&Alan39823.4388773148 Never have I felt more sane then when I was with other people with
LD/ADHD. Support Groups are awesome.

Well I just had my first autism group meeting for parents. I am so overwhelmed, but I knew if I told you guys about it you would understand. Right now I am happy, depressed, worried, and tired at the same time. I meet other parents who were having more issues with their children than I am and I have two with autism. One parent just found out two days ago. She was crying and shaking. When I came home I just looked at my four year old that is high functioning and put my head on his chest. The tears just came out. Some how he must have understood how I felt because he put his arm around my head and gave me a kiss more than once. He even looked me straight in the eye. I would like to start my boys on the gluten and cassein free diet. I am so nervous. But I will give it a try. I know that it would be difficult at times because they already have their preferred foods. If any of you have a support group in your area I encourage you to go or start one up if you can. Many blessings to any parent that has a child with any disability. Thanks for being a listening ear tonight.  Our kids understand emotion-It is just hard for them to express it sometimes. But when they are able to share that moment with us, it is unforgettable. A support group is very helpful, especially for someone new to the diagnosis, or looking for networking help.

I am glad to hear the meeting went well. Its always sad to see someone who has to deal with more than you esp. when you have 2 asd children and they only have one.  I am looking for a support group, I think I may go to the meeting they have about an hour away this month if everything works out right.

My kids understand some emotions especially my daughter and she can express them for the most part. But she cant say Mom Im sad.....
