Dentist success!

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

Oh this is amazing!  My son has been going to dental appointments since he was 2 1/2.  None of them have been successful.  Besides having ASD, he was born with a cleft palate, and he has had several major surgeries in his mouth.  So combine that with the ASD and forget it - he doesn't let anyone in his mouth.

We've tried to go every 6 months for years.  The hygenist tries to get in there, but he fights, they don't want to upset him, we give up, reschedule and try again in 6 months.  With the same results.

Last fall, it became clear to me that something had to change, as his teeth are growing in not well, his bite isn't good (due to the cleft), and I had to do something.

I scheduled an appointment with the cleft team, that had not seen him in almost 2 years, since his last (and final) cleft surgery.  I went there to try to find some help with his dental issues.  At the appointment, part of their team, a dentist, came in and saw Nick and he was easily able to get Nick to open his mouth and he looked at him and told me his concerns, and told me "call my office and schedule an appointment.  I will take him as a patient."

YAY!!  We had the appointment today and it was AMAZING!  This doctor not only deals with cleft children, he and his whole staff deal with and are trained in handling autistic and other special needs children.  They were incredible.  So careing and gentle with Nick.  He got X-rays successfully done, had his teeth checked and cleaned, and we have a plan going forward.  Before the year ends, I was told Nick will be in braces to correct some problems he is having.

This was a huge accomplishment.  My son has not let anyone inside his mouth voluntarily.  I love this office.  I love the dentists, the hygenists, the staff.  I've never met anyone like them.  I walked out of there feeling so happy and confident knowing my son is finally going to get the dental issues he has cleared up.

Anyone who lives in the Southern Tier of NY who needs some help finding a dentist, get in touch with me.  The impossible happened today.

That's great! Seems like you won't be having any more major problems while visiting the dentist. And it's good to hear your son is comfortable with themFantastic! Isn't it always awesome when the impossible happens! It's happened to me several times over, so I know your excitement!

Congratulations!

Loren
