West Virginia Services?

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

Hello,
I'm new to this and wondering what services are available to children
(3.5 yrs) in West Virginia? I've heard horror stories about families waiting
months and months just to be evaluated for special education services in
the public school district; this doesn't seem like it could be legal to me, but
I'm curious.
Just in case, I have been calling around looking for child care
providers that will accept children with special needs, and I haven't found
one yet. Hi and welcome. I am not from West Virginia, I am in Virginia and the best thing I can tell you is to try and find a speech therapist, ot and even a PT is needed. Another place you may be able to find information is at Unlocking Autism, they have been very helpful. Good Luck to you and your little one Thanks, I'll check out Unlocking Autism as well. I'm not worried about
speech, etc (I'm in an SLP grad program), I'm more concerned with child care
facilities that will accept a child with SN (not potty trained) that I can utilize
until the wait is up to get her into a SN preschool/kindergarten. I know that
they exist because in my hometown there are a few, and I'm not in a larger
city. I just can't seem to locate them and the Dept. of HHR is useless here (so
far).I just moved to PA from WV and I can tell you that your child should be able to be evaluated to start K4 program now(depending on birthday).  There is also a program that catches special needs children before that. Sorry i can't remember the name, it's been so long(my son is 9). Sign up for medicad waiver program asap, waiting list is long but covers everything. And there is a time limit on how long the schools are allowed to take after eval to enrollment. Don't know exact amount, but more than 3 weeks is too long. Check school districts web site. Sometimes you can find a lot of answers that way. Also, call the Autism Services Center in Huntington. They can give you more info than me and were a great help to me. (304)525-8014. If I may ask, what part of wv are you in? First things first. Call your board of education and set up a meeting to get him evaluated. At the age of 3 its the board of educations job to now offer services if needed. Also you can call birth-3 and just ask them to point you to any one that offers services. I live in the fayette county area.

You should also check out Marshall University from what I hear.
