Hi everyone, I currently live in Northern ca and was receiving great services for my autistic son until he turned 3. How we are constantly fighting the school district and have had to pay all his services out of pocket. We are about to run out of money and are considering moving to Mass. We are looking in the Northampton area since it is a college town and I'm planing on going back to school to become and ABA therapist. My main question is if anyone was from this area and knows how the services are there. THe most important thing is that he not be separated and treated as an equal and he gets good therapy like floor time and ot. And of course that you don't have to fight like crazy to get these services, we are running very dry on money and patience. Thanks for your help. Also was woundering if there were any meet up groups in the area.I'm sorry I know nothing about Northhampton. I am in the North Shore area and I can't say enough about how much I love it here. We almost moved to New Hampshire before we knew about Liam's diagnosis and we are so glad we did not. I know he would not be where he is today without the help he has recieved. I moved from Northern Mass, on NH border because services were bad, due to the lack of funding in our school system and, the next city doing ESL before ASD (there was a 3-5 year waiting list for services in Lowell). However, where Liam's mummy lives is GREAT..Northshore had great services. You can inquire before moving..look up the district you would be in and contact the DMR (if they still do the services--liamsmummy might no), to get you geered up for what is in store. I am pretty sure you will do well in that area.Thank you for all your Help.. Kelly 4jesus what dose DMR mean. I"ve been trying and trying to find out what they offer in Northampton school district. i even called the district but all i got was yeah we have services, and we have a preschool program. BUt I can' get a straight answer and no one seems to live in that area. I"m just very frustrated Because Northampton seems like a great place for us but I"m just scared we are going to get the run around for services again. The DMR is department of mental retardation. they can evaluate your child to see if he qualifies for any extra funding. We did that but they don't do much for those that just have an autism diagnosis and do not qualify under the MR part. I have a feeling Northhampton will not really tell you much until you are going to be there. We got the run around too because they don't want to commit to anything. Liam has an awesome program that was created for him. I'm not sure where else you can try because I don't know that area. You can also get Masshealth in MA. If you have a disability and they help with medical payments. You may want to call Community Resources for People with Autism- they are located in Easthampton. They could possibly connect you with a family in Northampton. Our DAN dr, Dr Lynch, is part of Northampton Wellness- you could call their office and see if they can tell you anything. Another option would be to call Whole Children in Hadley- it was started by a group of moms of special needs kids- maybe they could tell you about the Northampton school system. I am about half hr from Northampton and dont know anyone in that district
Good Luck Just wondering which school offers the ABA program? I am have heard that Westfield State offers it, Elms has a graduate program in autism-but its not an aba program and Western New England College offers a doctoral in behavior. Best of luck to you and your child |
