Chelation

We are doing chelation on Matthew.  The kind we are doing is called PCA-Rx.  It is fairly new but supposed to be completely safe.  It is all natural, none of the chemicals that are in the other ones.  We started this in August and have seen no side effects at all.  He is understanding things a little better since then.  However, we also started vitamin therapy at the same time so I can't tell you if it was the chelation, the vitamins, or a combination of the two that has made the difference.

Ruth

Hi everyone. I just have a question for you guys. I was wondering what the general opinion is on chelation therapy. I am about to go get the results of the heavy metals blood test that was taken on Nick about a month ago. He is seeing a doctor who has said if there is significant amouts of mercury in his blood, that she would like to do chelation therapy. I am uneasy about this. But what if he does have high levels... what do we do about it? any thoughts on this?

I don't have any information to share with you, but I wanted to wish you the best of luck.  If you do decide to try chelation, please come back and share your experience with us :)I have notheard much about chelation except conflicting sories which have guided me agianst it/ Just look into it especially into what Ruth uses, it might be a better alternative since it is natural.  Good luck

Im sorry but i have a question i am not familiar with this Chelation Therapy what exactly is it and how does it work is there somewhere i could get more info?

boy do i feel silly

Hi Ruth,

Are you doing the chelation by yourself or with a DAN practitioner? I was wondering if we can do the safe version of chelation ourselves.

Interesting thoughts Wendye.

I was just reading the AAP new Policy statement on Lead. It's interesting to note that chelating for lead levels from 20-45 has no impact on long term cognitive ability.

I'm not thoroghly convince that even if mercury were the problem-chelating years later will change anything. Hopefully future research will give us answers to these questions.

I have not yet done any chelation on my son (Patrick, 5 years) because no one has convinced me yet that it is safe.  From my readings to date ( I am a DAN taught doctor) it seems as if most agents can definitely mobilize the metals but what happens to them after that can not be guaranteed.  In other words, you might just cause more metals that were previously in other tissues, to now leak into the brain.  It's not a firm science.  Therefore, I am a bit reluctant to try it just yet.  Instead, why not just support the child's own liver function (the liver is the detoxifier of the body) with some supplements for now.  It's probably also helpful to give things like Vit C, etc that detoxify as well.  Anad melatonin can also be good for detox (yet I have some concerns there too - see my melatonin posting).  Just my opinion.  I have patients in my practice who are chelating with another doctor too as I don't offer this.  so far, no great responses.

Well the results came back and he is toxic. The dr has suggested oral chelation. It's still upsetting to me to have to make this decision. The dr also said that it was highly possilbe that it would not improve the autism at all. Ironically, he was not toxic with mercury...just every other heavy metals. Here is an amazing website that can teach us all alot- about chelation,
supplements, etc.
http://www.danasview.net/parent3.htm#chelation
Check it out- Dana has helped me tremendously! Good luck!
Best,
Annie dmps is what are allergist uses it. Anyone saw good result with this?

I am not sure what kind of Dr. he sees. He is on some treatment that grows new neurons. Will take 2-3 years. He does more detailed Brain testing. He can pinpoint exact was is wrong. He can even tell if you have dead neurons .

Chealation rids heavy metals from the tissues in the body. They live in CA. is what I know now.
I know a family who has done it with their son and it helped. He turns out to have brain damage from while his Mom was pregnant. It took 12 years and a Dr.in Mexico to tell the truth about their son. Therapies 10 years helped him none. He is now having to grow new neurons and will require years of therapy to be taught what didn't help before.
I am very interested in this story. Can you please give more detail if possible? How did the doctor (what kind of doctor) determine that the child had brain damage during pregnancy? Is cheation helping with growing new neurons?

I know a family who has done it with their son and it helped. He turns out to have brain damage from while his Mom was pregnant. It took 12 years and a Dr.in Mexico to tell the truth about their son. Therapies 10 years helped him none. He is now having to grow new neurons and will require years of therapy to be taught what didn't help before. Dmps is done like this a urine test before the chealation and one after. My question though isn't Toxic avoidance isn't it hard to totaly avoid for life. It is in fish, fillings, environment, water. You must do 6 hrs. urines for each ones of this. This is so confusing to me on who to listen to and who not to. Some Dr.'s say this doesn't cause ASd. If there is no guarantee of a change why do it. Won't they get it again anyway since metals can come in many ways. I just wonder if total avoidance is even possible after Chealation.

Hi everyone, I am new to this board. I just want to wish all of you great success in finding the treatment that will help your child. There are many out there and I believe there is the right one for each child. Here are some great websites www.danconference.com and www.autismwebsite.com/ari/index.htm I have attended several of these conferences. There is hope for a cure you just need the right people to help you. Even though my son is 32 years old I still research all of the new treatments. One thing that has helped him in the past 8 months is antioxidants. As you may know they help remove the toxins out of our bodies. The one in particular that I have used is the mangosteen juice. It has calmed my son and killed bacteria that vancomycin couldn't. Check out www.thegoldenfruit.com which will give you more info about it. I hope this has helped. Keep the faith.

Aussiemum...

I couldn't agree with you more.  Research, research, research is the key.  I've only been dealing with this since this past October, but I must add that I know more than most doctors I've come in contact with.  When I had to take my daughter into the ER a few weeks ago due to dehydration, the ER doc was asking me a ton of questions about the DAN! approach that we were following.  It is simply amazing to see the ignorance in the medical community with regards to Autism.

My pediatrician, the one who vehemently denied my initial questions regarding my daughter showing autistic symptoms, told me that "Chelation kills kids."  Hogwash.  Ignorance kills kids.

We too are in round 2 of oral chelation (DMSA) in addition to multiple supplements and are seeing phenomenal results.  I don't know what in particular is causing the changes, but I'll continue on our track TO THE END OF TIME in order to have my daughter back.  We are only at the beginning of a very long road, but we see a light at the end of her tunnel.

It is so true that Autism is a puzzle and I'll gladly put all the pieces together to get my daughter whole, even if I am faced with naysayers and ignorance.

we were just told that you have to be careful about some urine containers having traces of metals in them when our kids tested high for copper which can cause autistic symptoms. So now they want a repeat with metal free containers....I kind of felt like they were stalling or making stuff up because they also mysteriously forgot to do my son's mercury test last time after catherizing him for it....am I being paranoid or what?  Anyway anybody else who has heard of the metal container thing please post too. Thanks...

I'd be willing to do chelation just for the fact that the body shouldn't harbor all that extra crap!

For those who have done this therapy please post results if there are any we can actually here about.

Here is my experience chelating my by with DMSA through round 5.  Interestingly enough, mercury did not come out in testable amounts until round 9, and then it only showed up because I told the lab techs to test for organic as well as metallic mercury (which had not been done previously).  The mercury was high enough with the provocation challenge with round 9 to warrant further treatment, despite his lead being below 10.

http://www.danasview.net/cheltest.htm

Hi,
I am new here. I am really excited to find a message board designed around people going through the same thing.
I have a three year old who is about to undergo chelation treatment in a couple of months. We see a DAN (defeat autisim now) doctor. We are going to be using DMSA chelation.
The way our doctor explained it was the mercury from vaccinations gets stored in fat. So it doesnt show up on the blood, urine, stool, hair tests. We have only found very elevated levels of tin so far in the blood work. So we are going to doa  challenge test with chelation to bring some of the mercury back out into the bloodstream and re-test for mercury.
His toxicity has caused major bowel upset and lead to leaky gut syndrome. He had over twelve ear infections, and has now been able to go for long periods of time without.
I would love to hear from anyone who has advice or just wants to chat :)
ok so am i nuts what is this treatment i understand bout the high levels of metals in 1s  blood how does this effect our kids and is the treatment toxic itself.
Hi,
you arent nuts. This whole DAN thing has been confusing for me along the way too. I highly suggest starting at this website first http://www.autismwebsite.com/ari-lists/danstatement.html

From there you can find other links that will explain about heavy metal poisoning. But basically chelation is used to grab onto the metals stored in the body(usually fat stores) Then brings it back out into the bloodstream to be detoxified by the liver and kidneys. More tests are needed along the way to see how much mercury is pulled out and how the liver and kidneys are functioning.
Wow...that's just awful....frightening actually.
I'm sorry I really don't have any advice, either way, but I certainly feel for you in this dilemma.  Hopefully someone else will have some input for you...

Hi Lesley

Nick had high levels of antimony, arsenic, cadmiuim, thallium, tin and elevated levels of lead. Most of these were triple the normal range. A couple of them were double/ He also had high levels o fchromium, molbdenum, boron, sulfur and vanadium. I don't even know what some of these are. The only thing the dr said was he could have been exposed in everyday life.. Duh! She didn't give any examples, but I checked out that website you gave and water seems to be a consistent factor. Who knows???!!! As far as her experience, well she has only chelated "about a half dozen."  I know that she has attended many DAN conferences .She will be chelating orally. Suppposedly it is not as dangerous, but the side effects are the same either way. What I want to know is what will happen if I don't decide to put him through this........

Hi Nicksmommy...I can only imagine the struggle you're going through trying to make this very scary decision.  I wish you and Nick the best in whatever you decide to do.

May I ask, did the doctor explain what metals showed toxicity?  Did he explain how Nick may have acquired the levels he did?  I'm glad to hear he didn't 'promise' miracles like I've heard others do...do you have a lot of faith in him or this process?  (sorry for so many questions, but it just sounds like such an extreme process that you really have to weigh everything)

I did find this link, and about 3/4's down, it shows a table of diff't symptoms and what metals may have an affect....it was interesting...basically it reassures me that we're pretty much trashing the planet at the expense of our children.
http://www.extremehealthusa.com/source.html

Good luck to you...wishing you the best...
Update us and let us know what you decide to do, and how it's going.

I am new here and have just read all of your postings which have really helped me.  I would like to urge all of you to read a letter written by Robert Kennedy Jr at: http://www.health-reports.com/RobertKennedyJrarticle.html  There is a lot more at this web site that can help us to understand what is happening regarding this epidemic of autism.  My little 3 ear old grandson Blake used to say words like "light", "hot", "up" ... with such happiness and enthusiasm and pride in his face.  Now he doesn't talk at all, doesn't have an appetite, cannot make eye contact, bangs his head on the sofa, still wears diapers, screams, runs in circles, shows no facial expression, and the list is getting bigger all the time.  I know my anger at the pharmacutical companies isn't going to find a cure for Blake, but maybe the new babies can avoid it if enough parents are aware of what is happening.    there are 2 amazing websites for detoxing/chelation for these kids that
give you great info if you decide to go that route

www.generationrescue.org
www.safeminds.org

i would also urge you all to read evidence of harm by david kirby. he
writes through the view of mothers and what they went and still go
through to find out if their kids are mercury poisenedHey,

Aussiemom - glad to hear that you've had postive results with the chelation therapy, but what type of chelation therapy did you make use of? I understand that you used the oral form, but which compund did you make use of?

I ask because there are some people who have chelation therapy using EDTA while other people have chelation therapy using DMSA. Both groups of people seem to be adament that the type that they used was the best or rather the most beneficial. I'm interestd in what the differences are between the two types. Can anyone enlighten me about that?

We are currently in our second month of the GFCF diet and a pretty substantial supplement regimen (multivitamins, Omega 3 oil, folic acid, calcium/magnesium, milk thistle, Vitamin B6, probiotics, reduced glutathione, zinc and some others) and chelation is our next step.  This past January we visited our DAN! doctor for the very first time and Lauren underwent a multitude (to the tune of $1500) of lab tests.  Although nothing was covered under our insurance, I'd spend this money again in a heart beat...monthly if need be.  We've discovered several food allergies that we never even knew about.  I could write volumes with respect to this but simply cannot with her on my lap, but if anyone wants info, feel free to private message me and we can connect.

Lauren is allergic to all casein (dairy), oranges/grapefruits, zucchini, soy, goat's milk and a multitude of other things.  She cannot have any gluten as it is crossing the blood/brain barrier and forming opiates.  That explains alot of her "living in another world" episodes.  Since the GFCF diet, she has increased her eye contact dramatically, is starting to say a few words and will hug and play with her sister.  Although it is a real pain in the neck, we will stay with this indefinitely if need be.  It is *that* worth it.

She has elevated levels of lead, tin, mercury, antimony and arsenic according to our toxic metal challenge.  Our practitioner has worked with over a hundred children doing DMPS and all but one (a 16 yo) have reacted favorably.  I must admit I am a bit apprehensive, but how can I deny her a way to help her.  I know many disagree, but with careful monitoring, this is a safe procedure.

We had her on Flagyl for her high levels of Clostridia but took her off due to the severity of the side effects.  We will just bombard it will probiotics.

I look forward to coming back here and reporting positive results!

Can you start with a super low dose and work your way up? That way, if there are side affects, you can stop before they are severe.

Hey everyone, check with your DAN! doctors about using antioxidants like the mangosteen fruit. It has helped my son a great deal. He is calmer, happy, eats better and hasn't been on antibiotics for over 9 months. Also his doctor is took him off Naltrexone, Benadryl, Gastrocrom and now Tegretol. As you probably already know antioxidants help flush out the toxins in our bodies. You or your doctor can research it on www.pubmed.com (National Library of Medicine) and type in mangosteen or garcinia mangostana (scientific name)  It is used as not only an antioxidant but an anti-inflamatory, kills fungus, bacteria, etc., etc. There is research on it comparing it to the strong antibiotic Vancomycin. My son was on that to kill bacteria in his stomach and it didn't help. So we tried the mangosteen and he started eating again and his behaviors decreased 80%  Also check out www.xango.net  and www.thegoldenfruit.com  Xango is the company that originally brought the mangosteen to the states. They are actually nation wide. Wild Flavors which is a billion dollar 70 year old company makes drinks like Capri Sun, Sobe', Nestles and now Xango. Be careful of the immitations out there. They don't have the full fruit (peri-carp or rind) included and that is where all of the powerful antioxidants called xanthones are. Xango is all natural. All fruit. It is worth your time to research it. My son is not the only Autistic person getting great results. I pray all of our kids get cured of Autism. God bless

Karens Hope

in reply to the chelation, my son is 30months and we are currently using the chelation and have seen very good results. we are doing many therapies with him but you can definitly see a difference when it is time to start his next round. He is on his fourth round, 3-100mg doses for 3 days then 11 days off and repeat the process, after 4th round you do a challenge  to see what amounts of metals are being released. Overall we don't see any negative effects, just positive. It is a big decision but i feel that you don't try then you will never know what might have been. if you have any questions about the different therapies you can e-mail me, i would be happy to share our experiences

Hi, my son is 2.5 yrs his eye contact is poor, he can only say a few words and only uses the word "dummy" every day.  His motor skills are fine.  His social skills poor and he shows no motivation to mix with other children.  However he loves to play with his toys.  I have started him with some omega 3.  I am considering changing his diet maybe get rid of mild and wheat.  I m interested in chelation have read alot of positive  stuff about it but would like to hear from anyone who has actually tryed it on their child.  Another interesting issue is that about 8 years ago when I had the hep B injection the next day I could not talk. did not think anything of it at the time other than it was a severe migrane.  How I wish I never had my son vaccinated looking at the evidence that it causes autism now.  I m from the UK does anyone know of any chelation specialists or good therapists here?

thanks for reading

dave

hi there

I had to register and come and post a reply !

I have orally chelated my son with FANTASTIC results. I had him tested and his results for lead, copper and iron were off the graph they were so bad ! Copper is responsible for speech ! So with his excess copper levels that completely explained his non verbalness for me and it also causes headaches and migraines amongst other things.

Treatment consisted of a formula or set of vitamins and minerals that whilst replacing certain levels that he is lacking in (like zinc) would also pull some of the bad crap out of him and make him healthier !

What you need to know is there are  2 main ways of chelating - orally and by I.V. or Intravenous Drip . I dont recommend IV unless it is extremely dangerous levels of things such as LEAD and its life threatening as using IV to pull heavy metals out is FAST and FULL ON !

Orally is slow and can be watched with further tests and altered as you go if u need be.

2 years ago my son would not look at you , would not make eye contact , was completely non verbal , would stim like crazy and would have no expressions , no joy , no happiness etc

Today after only 2 rounds so far - he smiles , he giggles, he not only mkaes eye contact but stares into your eyes , he is baby babbling and wants to talk and sometimes blurts out words, he responds to you and follows simple directions , he is calm but most importantly he is AWAKE and HAPPY !

He is NOT CURED but he is healthier and most of his ASD symptoms have vanished !

The critics have tried to say "he has grown out of ASD" (lol yeah right) or that there are other things responsible like going to school etc - ummm  NOPE not that . He has completely turned around within months of starting oral chelation - that is the only answer !

Will I continue Oral chelation ? Dead right I will !

What you all need to do is RESEARCH like mad on this , do not just take what your Doctors tell you as GOSPEL , talk to as many PARENTS that have gone through this as possible but most importantly dont expect a QUICK CURE because there is no such thing !

If you treat the symptoms then you are on the right track for your childs recovery.

Ask yourself - what are my childs symptoms ? (maybe headaches, non verbalness , runny poos, spinning, tip toeing, etc)

then look up on the internet and ask yourself what are the effects of LEAD POISONING (from vaccines and old houses and soil etc) , MERCURY POISOING(from vaccines, fish, old tooth fillings etc) , COPPER (from vaccines and very old water pipes) AND CADMIUM (mostly from cigarette smoke) etc etc.

and then you may just see some shocking results !

I wish you all the best of luck but please if you follow this road always check with a DAN doctor first !

cheers

Our son will soon be tested for metals and the DAN doc we just saw said he might recommend chelation if he tests positive for large amts.  From everything we've read, however, I don't think we'd get it done.  As Maia said, there's no real scientific evidence showing any sort of improvement after chelation.  My son is only (almost) 3 yrs old ... I feel guilty enough that he has autism.  I couldn't live with myself if I did anything to damage his liver be/c of trying something that hasn't been scientifically proven to be effective in helping him, you know?  Diet, therapies, supplements ... all these I can rationalize and I believe in.  Chelation?  I just don't know.  It always seems like it's a friend of a friend of a friend's child who has definitely benefitted from this ... and not a first-hand story of improvement. Can anbody contribute information to help this study????        &nb sp;         &nb sp;
This study is being conducted through Webster University’s Advanced
Research Methods class. I have been an active member of the autism
community for a number of years doing various types of research as well
as working with autistic children. I have dedicated a significant portion of
my life to the autism field and strive to find appropriate treatments to
make each individuals life as productive and independent as possible. The
main purpose of this study is to examine aspects of chelation therapy as
treatment for autism. This is not an experiment; it is simply a survey
asking various questions about your child. This survey and the
information you give us will be kept anonymous. If you are interested in
helping just reply to this message and I will send you the survey and
instuctions, it should not take more than fifteen minutes to complete.
From this survey I hope to provide a rationale for a need to generate
further FDA approved studies and research on the topic of chelation
therapy as treatment for autism. If you would like to hear about the
results of this study, please contact the Behavioral and Social Sciences
