Eating Issues

Since your son is rejecting entire food groups, you might want to consult a specialist.

I also have lots of online resources related to picky/resistant eaters here.  You might be especially interested in the steps to introducing a new food (tasting comes well after smelling, touching to the lips, tolerating seeing it on the plate, etc).

My youngest son is a picky eater and doesn't have a sense of hunger.  This means that he has no built-in motivation to eat something that he may not like.  We use a lot of humor to encourage him to eat non-preferred foods.

If he tries something new, he might get rewarded by being tossed up into the air with a hip hurrah, or get a marshmallow with his hot chocolate.  We also found that he'll eat raw carrots if they have a handle so he doesn't have to touch them (we use a toothpick or corn-on-the-cob poke).

For lunch at school, it works much better to have the food in a clear container with sections, so he sees the food, doesn't have to deal with bags, and the different foods don't touch each other.

Good luck with everything.

Our 5yo son w/ASD will not try any new foods. His diet consists of goldfish crackers, ritz bits, Cheez its, "Graduate" fruit puffs and Pedisure... that's it. He used to eat fruit, even cantaloupe, but he is not willing to try anything now. It is going on 2 years now. He obviously craves the salt in the crackers. We have had all the GI tests (he is lactose intolerant) and everything is fine, other than the milk issue. We give him gummi style vitamins with fruit snacks, thank god he takes those. We need some fresh ideas for introducing food.

Any ideas, no matter how crazy, we have tried everything we can think of.
