Hes Puking while I am eating! It is the most bizzare thing I have ever seen him do! It started around Thanksgiving when I was eating leftovers for dinner and he came in the kitchen and saw the food and gagged several times then threw up all over the place. I thought well that was an isolated case- then he started doing it about once a week around dinner time. Today he threw up twice watching me eat- once I was eating cereal and the other time a piece of candy! He does have a bad sinus infection right now and he is coughing a lot so that may have his gag reflex heightened but gez........ this is getting old! I feel like a closet eater- I am eating in my bedroom, in the hallway, in the laundry room- anywhere that he won't see me- CRAZY huh??? Anyone else have a puker or one with a sensitive gag reflex? When and if did they outgrow it......... I sure hope mine does soon! taylor doesn't do that when she sees food (I dont think anything could deter her from food..lol)...but if she has as cough, she will throw up, automatically. when she coughs, for some reason it gags her and...thar she blows. I hate cold season--my steam cleaner is working over time. (She's 10..she still does it).My sympathies - my DS has a really sensitive gag reflex, and it can really wreak havoc. Food doesn't do it to him, but he can throw up at will when he sees me bring out medicine or supplements that he doesn't want to take. It's a thrill, isn't it?i will gag from some smell of food but have never thrown up .im picky eater an the way some food looks or smell can make me sick .maybe his is from being sick .Katie's been throwing up for the last 24 hours, it started with a cold and conjestion and has now moved on to her tummy. Doc says there is a nasty stomach virus going around (this was when I took her for all her conjestion and before it hit her stomach!). I hope your little guy is not sick and yet I also hope its not a really sensitive gag reflex - either way, puking is gross and I hope it stops! Well, I gotta go do my hundredth load of laundry for the day. Best of Luck! I worked with a child who did this for a short time. All he ate was pureed food. He liked to go in the kitcehen when his mom was cooking but as soon as he took a whif he threw up. I know for sure she overracted and this caused the child to continue this behavior
Some questions, how did you react when he did this the first few times? It could be that subcontoiusly you reacted in a way that gave him some attention and now he is doing it for that attention. Even a look of dissapointment or gross out look could feed into it. You could try a few things. One that comes to mind is When he does this ignore it dont make any face or look towards him. Clean it up and as hard as it may be go back to eating. If he is doing it for attention he wont get it and will stop. I think now that the puking has passed he was sick after all. He is so much better today and I have eaten in front of him a couple of times with no problems. He does have a very sensitive gag reflex though- he has since he was a baby. He was a world class puker even before he knew how to work the system! I will keep an eye on it though to see if it could be behavioral- I really don't think it is because I am so used to him puking I am very calm about it- I just grab a towel and make him sit down so I can clean up easily and then he goes back to playing- no drama on either end. Glad to know that there are other pukers out there! J used to barf really easily. A sight or smell would be enough to set him off. One time he threw up after silently reading the words "snails" on a menu. If anyone else near him threw up, he would throw up. If another kid in his class did something gross like nose picking, J would throw up. He almost threw up in Chinatown once, just from watching people eat. He also STILL reminds me---7 years later--- of how uncomfortable he was watching a homeless woman, in a Manhattan pizzeria, chewing with her mouth open. I am not sure what causes this easy regurgitation, but it is a pretty common behavior in ASD kids, I think.BTW, great photo. Your son is adorable. My son gag/pukes on certain textures, slimy food,'disgusting' food and watching something gross to HIM. O ya and also if we make him try something on his plate since he never tries anything! My husband gags/vomits ALL the time, hell go thru spells of vomiting at LEAST once a day from looking, thinking about or smelling something gross. Also most of the time the gross things are not gross at all! In my house i am always cleaning up vomit or gross things (dead bird the cat dragged in etc.) My hubby even vomits on his vomit when trying to clean it up! I always thought it was very strange! I hope the vomiting passes soon, it is no fun! Good luck! |
