I'm new to this board, I only have a few posts, so you don't really know me and I don't really know any of you, but anyway-Em was in kindergarten today and it went well! We thought it would be really hard for him, since this was a new place for him. He's already been in a kindergarten a few times last year for about two hours each time, and he knew the people there, and he got quite used to it in a while. But then we got the news about MR (he will get the diagnosis when he enters school)and he was transfered to another program. Since he's 5 already they thought it was best he started full day right away and see how it works-if it would be too much for him, we would do two hours a day again for a few weeks, untill he gets used to it. Anyway, the new program and group he's been placed in now are great! There are five kids-two with down syndrome, one with cp, another one who wasn't there today and Em. They read a story and he actually sat there and listened. Not the whole time, but wow! He's so hyper and never sits still at home, it was just amazing to see him sit there with all the other kids. They didn't even have problems with him at lunch (we have a big problem with food right now, he won't eat anything and will get really upset if he sees food on the table)-he wouldn't eat, but didn't have a meltdown over other kids eating neither. And he drank a bit of tea-He never drinks tea! In fact, he doesn't drink anything at all unless you force him. The only problem that did happen was him throwing things around and having a bit of a tantrum when they had nap time-he was told he doesn't need to have a nap, but he got a bit upset when they started pulling the pillows and stuff out. So not entirelly without problems, but they were really minor. A whole day without a meltdown, no biting, no kicking...I'm really proud right now:) If anyone read through that, thanks. The board says 'brag a little'...well I did, for a good reason :) That's awesome! Sounds like it's where he needs to be to succeed. How wonderful! Its funny how we parents agonize over these kinds of changes and set ourselves up to expect the worst and then our little ones surprise us! I'm so happy Em had such a great first day and I hope it gets better and better each day! Congratulations and thanks for sharing! That is great news, and I am certain as he gets more used to school is will
go even more smoothly. Harriet |
