Michaels first report card!!!

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

We had report card conferences last night,  Michaels report card is excellent!!  Michael scored proficient in 95% of targeted abilities. I couldnt be happier with this.  areas of weakness are participating in discussions  in all areas, choral reading, chants and rereading. also orally resonding to literature.

he is also at 95% for overall assessment data for the end of year target numbers and its only the first quarter.

so my question is  what should i bring to the table at iep meeting next month for his weaknesses that i've listed?

I'm not really sure about the IEP, but I did want to offer my congratulations.  You must be very proud! This is great news.  Why is there going to be an IEP meeting next month?  Has it been a year since your last meeting? Are they going to try to remove the IEP?  It's the teachers' job to explain to you exactly what weaknesses remain and to come up with goals that are appropriate. Also (not to rain on your parade), meeting goals is great, but does he meet grade level/age level standards?  If he is not functioning on grade level in any area, goals ought to be written for that. Make certain the goals that are set are goals that can be met in one year -- not in less than one year. There's no sense in writing an IEP that is simply not challenging.  The IEP is supposed to give him all the skills to meet grade level standards.  Ask to see how his skills compare to those of other his age (standardized testing will do this).  If his standard scores are not above 85 in every area (more than one standard deviation from the norm), he still needs help.

Michaels iep was written over the summer,  he transitioned from EI to kindy in september, alot of his goals had to do with transitioning,  we live very close to the school and we were worried he might run from school grounds or have trouble in the lunch room and class size so we had planned on meeting again early in the school year to modify eip and remove transition goals.

He has mostly transitioned without incident,  only problems i've noticed were the potty accidents ( which has resolved itself) , not eating ( which we are still working on) and communication and socialization.

the numbers i posted above are from the standard first quarter kindy report card so academically he is meeting grade level standards.

Wonderful.  If the school wants to take away the IEP, don't do it. Kindy standards are one thing. FIrst, second and third grade standards something completely different. I'm not predicting he won't meet those.  But if he is having difficulty as standards get harder, you'll be very happy you didn't allow them to take away the IEP. It is often harder to get it back once you've allowed your child to be declassified.  If he has met those transitioning goals, look at language and social goals. These areas are also areas that are included in IEPs. Whatever goals the Team writes ought to be goals it is likely it will take the rest of the year for your son to reach.  Good luck.WOW, what a great report. I also beleive if the kids a late birthday that has some part in all this. This makes them bascially almost 1 year younger as well. For Daniel that is the case. He is a May birthday. daniel's mom39807.6228472222
