This week C started mainstreaming into a 2nd grade classroom for 1 hour per day for math and so far so good. There are 26 kids in the class. One of his classroom aides goes with him but she's standing in the back and not sitting with him. C is in a LOP (Learning Opportunities Program) 1st/2nd class with 12 kids, 1 teacher and 2 aides, plus push ins for speech, OT & social work. He's mainstreamed for art, music, PE, computers, lunch & recess. This math integration is the first time he's being mainstreamed for an academic subject. I had a hard time concentrating at work on Monday but luckily his teacher called me as soon as it was over (have I mentioned that I LOVE this woman?) and let me know it went well. I hope it continues to go ok - I'm trying not to set my expectations too high but it's hard not to KWIM? Anyway, his teacher is confident that he should be able to do the work. It's really behaviors / immaturity that keep him out of the mainstream. He sometimes melts down when he gets frustrated. He always wants to sit next to the teacher and wants lots of hug and back scratching with he's at his desk. He's very enthusiastic and always raises his hand and has a hard time waiting to be called on. He craves alot of reinforecment and encouragement. He really thrives with the 1:1 instruction but group situations are much harder. What's amazing is this isn't even on his IEP. It wasn't even discussed at the last meeting. His teacher just decided that this is the logical next step for him and he's ready so she worked with the regular ed teachers and the administration and made it all happen. She just took the initiative because she thought is was the right thing to do. I didn't have to do a thing! I love this woman!! Keep your fingers crossed for us that this all works out! WAHOO! I cannot wait for T to get there. There is so much more value in group participation and collaborative learning! Good luck, and keep us posted! Jeeze, are C and I like twins er something. In 2nd grade I remember going to a regular classroom for math. Not art or jym, but music, recess and lunch. We didnt have a computer lab in the late 1980's but I did get to use an apple 2E sometimes, I cant remember why or where everybody went during this time, but I always got stuck by myself in some other class and got to screw around on the computer... idk why. It was also behavor and immaturity that kept me outa full mainstream until 5th grade as well. |
