helping picky eatermost of us on the asd are picky eater sometime it can be a sencorey thing .but i get conncerd when i rread so many kids geting away with eatting junk food .wonder how much it a power play .my mom an my friend also dose this with her son .growing up .i had to eat what my mom made .or at least try it before saying dont like it .only a few things i dont eat /so i would get something diff .but it was allways heathly chip an jucie for dinner would never have flew .in are house .,i couldnt have cookies becuse i pitched a fit about dinner .my mom was stick about something .to help your litte kids with new foods what you can do is just put a small samout on there plate not make a big deal about it .can say you need to take a few bite of your dinner .before chips .becuse the child after awhile may find out they like it .most of my friends who have kids wiuth autism .do what my mom do an say it made a diff in geting them to eat good food im all kids would rather have chips then a sandswitch .when i babysat my neice an newphew they try an pull that .they say im hungery .i say what do u want to eat they say chips .i say that not food .you can have chip with a sandwitch Auti I wish it were that easy. My kids are 7 and 8. I do the "you have to taste it" and quite often they do but they gag on it and it doesn't change their eating habits. We are very strict and they don' get junk food for meals. My daughter will only eat vegetables raw and will eat pieces of meat but not meat sauce so I cant hide vegies in things. So she eats her vegies raw. She loves olives., pumpkin seeds, currants and juice. she will spit out water but will drink her bath water. My son won't eat vegetables apart from mashed potato, hates chicken(says its sloppy and gags on it) and cant stand pieces if meat but will eat sausages, rissoles(home made burger patties), Sspam and meat sauce. I steam and puree vegies and hide these in the rissoles, meat sauce and lately home made meat pies. I can get him to have fresh fruit if it is in a milk shake - other wise he cant stand the texture of raw fruit. And you guessed it my daughter eats fresh fruit but not in a milkshake/smoothie. they are both on a gluten free casein free diet- they go "hyper and get diarrhoea if they eat these foods" as well my daughter is on a low salicylate daiet and so has to avoid citrus fruits like oranges, cant have grapes, tomatos or brocolli 0r she becomes a screaming mess. They dont get junk food- they snack on rice crackers, and soy yoghurt and fruit. But by God they are still picky eaters. I get tired of the battles. When you are dealing with so many other issues already, Don't be too hard on the stressed parent who gives their child anything to eat even if it is chips just to get them to eat something. Believe me a lot of kids will go hungry rather than eat some that makes them gag. I knew one little boy who only ate food that was the colour white. It drove his poor Mum crazy and she always offered him other food. Iknew another boy who if the food on his plate was touching would not eat it and once even through it across the room. Its not always that straight forward and what works for one child doesn't always work for another. My two are such opposites and they both started out eating the same kinds of food for the first couple of years. |
