Help, requesting a meetingHere is a website that helps you formulate the proper writing for each type of IEP meeting, including your asking for a team meeting. It's on this website. http://www.autism-pdd.net/guidep.html I don't understand why the team isn't all inclusive for everyone--I haven't ever had that problem (and, if anything, i feel TOO MANY are in on ours sometimes). However, I would put a request in writing for those that you wish at the meeting to be there. I put down my case manager as an attendee all the time, but have never hit some of the issues others have in getting everyone to meet. Let us know how it goes--remember, you are not failing your child. The system is and you are doing everything you can to ensure your child doesn't fall into the cracks.
I have an advocate well 2 that i spoke with and one that attended a meeting wth me when i met with the school. The other advocate that i talked to has done this kind of work for 30 years and he says to write in his name into a letter when i request a meeting saying he is my child's advocate. Ok so he tells me to work on one thing at a time which i am i want an aide and that aide can help with potty, and keeping my child focused during school, and helping her around in and out of the class, and i want the potty goals to be more specific. The school is brushing me off not doing what i want keeping everything the same even though we had a meeting, the school is telling me my daughter does well and the tss is good with her and saying everything i requested in the meeting is already in the IEP. Actually the school isnt making the goals as specific as i want them and even though Data collection is in with the potty IEP goal no one is collecting any info when shes dry, wet whatever. No one is taking her to the potty either, they take her once or twice when everyone else is going that is it. My question really is when i write this letter should i tell them the purpose of the meeting like that i want the goals more specific and i want my child to have an aide or personal care assistant for her? Or do i write a letter seperate saying my child has that advocate and another letter saying i just want another meeting? The school is trying to give an aide for a few kids not just a one on one with my daughter. If anyone has links and suggestions on what i should write when requesting another meeting it will be helpful. My daughters Tss never attends the IEP meetings even though i request it the agency seems to think the behavioral specialist is enough. I just don't want a tss i'd rather an aide. My poor daughter and i feel like i am failing her, i want to get this right. Kelly you are the best thanks for responding to my posts and all the support you give. I can get everyone at the meeting but i guess i just wonder if i should write in the letter requesting the meeting telling the school what my purpose for this meeting is or just leave the request for the meeting vague and not tell them why we are having another meeting.Since I am paranoid after all the stuff I went through in my last state, I would be the worst to advise you, since it would be personal and not legal. I found that, when I told them in Mass. why I wanted a meeting, they seemed just a bit TOO prepared for me when I got there, and I felt..well, ganged up against--Our school system didn't like to pay for autism services and liked just having the kids mainstreamed, and walked in hallways for hours when they couldnt deal with the 32 kids in there. I always had problems when I requested changes, so that's why I am paranoid now--say nothing until I get into the room..lol. I do discuss my concerns with case manager ahead of time, and she is prepared with me on bringing up those concerns and reasons for meetings. Always a pleasure to be of help. I remember how alone I was when I first started all this process, and I never want anyone to feel that way. I think I respond too much (and many might agree), but that is just how I am. Keep us updated, okay? |
