| JulieA - please, what is Biomed?
Hi Alison. Like Micki said, biomedical treatment for autism is an approach to treating autism as a medical illness caused by various toxins and pathogens. How a child acquired them is still being debated by many, although most of us parents know where our kids got them from There are different ways to approach biomedical treatment. There is the DAN protocol, NIDS, there are naturopathic Dr.'s, holistic Dr.'s, the Yasko method and even parents who go it on there own. But the essential goal is to heal the gut, rid the body of heavy metals and pathogens and boost the immune system. In doing this our children are able to think and then able to take SOOOO much more from their traditional therapies. My 4 year old is doing fabulously and I would have to say pursuing this avenue of treatment is the single best decision we have made thus far since ds was dx'd...and we are doing them all by the way. He's had speech a minimum of 3 hours a week since he was 16 months old, 2 hours a week of OT, some PT at times, 40 hours a week of floor time for a year and a half, 30 hours a week of therapeutic preschools starting at 2, ABA starting this past summer (he never really needed it but we didn't want to say we never did it lol)...you name it, we've done it. But when we started biomed, THEN he just took off and all the pieces of the puzzle are finally falling into place. He was just reevaluated by his teacher at school and has closed the gaps to only a 10 month delay or less in language (due to articulation as he is apraxic), social and pre-writing, and is at or above age level in all other developmental areas. My boy is kicking some autism butt on biomedical treatments when combined with traditional therapies and we are tickled pink WOOOHOOOO!!!
If you search this forum for posts by little byrd, and there may even be some stickied up at the top, there will be a list somewhere of websites that are devoted to biomedical treatments. You will learn alot at these websites... JulieA39738.8125462963Alison-
go to the alternative treatment section of this board - there is a section
that includes biomedical approaches and Julie often posts there.
Biomedical is an approach that believes that autism was caused by
enviromental triggers and that this can be reversed -fully or partially -
through diet (mostly GF/CF) and detoxifiation. This is what DAN! doctors
do. If you feel that your child developed autism after a vaccination it
would make sense to try biomedical interventions. One recently more
famous proponent is Jenny Mc Carthy. I also found the book 'Healing the
new childhood epidemics' by Kenneth Bock interesting.Hi Julie
In one of your posts you mention the benefits of Biomed.
Please pardon my ignorance, but what is Biomed; M's Autism is vaccine related - could this help?
Cheers
