Best sped public schools in Dallas area

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

My family and I are anticipating a move to the Dallas area (Frisco, in
particular) next summer. I have two sons. The 12 year old 6th grader has
Asperger's syndrome along with associated behavioral and learning
disabilities. He is currently 50% sped and 50% regular classroom. I know
NOTHING about the Dallas area and am desperately seeking anyone who can
steer me in the right direction regarding best public schools. I will consider
private schools as well. I just know services are typically non-existent in
private schools that are not sped private schools. My other son is a
neurotypical 4th grader. I would also be interested in good public or private
schools for him as well. Any info will be helpful as I am completely
uninformed about the area schools. Thanks!Hi. I live in Frisco, and have a teenage son with moderate autism who attends a public middle school in Frisco.  Overall, we have not been overly impressed with the services provided to him.  The staff is very nice, and I know they care about my son, but the real services (speech, OT especially) are very lacking.  It was a disappointment to us as we expected much more out of this district.  I know of many parents who feel similarly, unfortunately.  Frisco ISD has tremendous growth at the moment, and I just don't think the school district can keep up (no excuse though).  There is plenty of money in this district, but it seems to me it's not being spent in the right areas..... Does your son require someone to be with him all or some of the time
during the day? I'm thinking I could get OT/speech therapy outside the
school district if I had to (don't want to...think the school should provide)
but safety and the ability to function in the routine at school is my
immediate concern. My son has been weaned off a full time assistant and
now only has minimal assistance, but it IS necessary. Do you know anything
about that part of the middle school?

I am in Lewisville which is sandwiched between Frisco and Dallas..I am not impressed with services here at all but I was lucky to find excellent private ABA and ST that knew how to help my dd. The schools here still do not do ABA and no social skills classes whatsoever....my dd never qualified for more than 30 minutes of speech  a week and the teachers get no education in autism.

This private school just opened up and looks pretty good but dont know enough about it..it is @ ten minutes from me.

Good luck:)

Yes, my son always has a paraprofessional (or teacher) with him when he is in the mainstream (which is unfortunately just for 'specials' and electives...I don't think Frisco makes enough of an attempt at inclusion).  FISD is the third district we have lived in since my son started school (gosh darn corporate relocations ;) ), and honestly, it has provided the least amount of services.  Granted, I think it does become more difficult to keep kids mainstreamed once they are older, as they can't always keep up with the academics of their peers.  But I'm just not seeing the "inclusion" with the regular student body here, and it makes me sad. And, it seems like with each IEP, they want to provide him with less and less.
