Hi everyone Are you happy with the services in your area? I think Illinois is ok? but I don't have anything to compare it with, What does your state - town offer for EI and school age? Mona Grandma to Devin 4 yrs ASD / SID Compared to Massachusetts, yes--the services I get would either be on waiting lists, or would not be offered there. The services in Kansas are the only reason I stay here--if it was up to me, I would be long gone. I love the elementary school but I don't reallyc are for the middle school services. I am already regretting Sean's IEP because, I know I am not going to agree with a lot of it and they are not going to get me to sign off on some things, either. They are too lax, and do too much modifying in regular classrooms, but their LD classroom leaves a lot to be desired, because it is geared towards severe symptoms and more learning problems than Sean has. Kinda hard to be happy since you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. I hope to find other alternatives and am working with case manager now on what I feel should be in Sean's activities. I also have the other 2 going to same school in 2 years so, I am concerned. They are both much more severe in needs than Sean is. I have found the autism society here very supportive. As for EI, Massachusetts, in my area had The Ann Sullivan Center. I absolutely adored my therapists that came in. They became like family and even came to the meetings, long after the age of 3 when we were doing IEP's in the public school system. I had therapies, 4 out of 5 days a week and, when I went away for a few days, with my husband in charge, they each volunteered (not paid for this time) to come in and help, knowing Tom would not enforce the new learning they had been working on=so they came in to make sure they didn't lose any learned behaviors. They also had a group that met 1 time a week, with kids that had all sorts of disorders--buses provided. So EI, to me was a big blessing and I kept the same therapists (requested them) with all 3 of my kids. I don't think Kansas offers all that, nor would they go out of their way and take free time to help another kid..but I could be wrong. I've heard some good but a lot of bad on the EI here. I just can't say for sure. God Bless, Kelly Generally happy, yes. We have to drive into the next city more often than I'd like, but the schools where we live are good, and we found ST and OT here that DS is really responding to. There's a great support group here in town too, so we don't feel alone in all this.Yes. We had to fight A LOT to get what we need now, but when Payne was 3 they put him in a specialized program, etc and he did GREAT! It wasn't until he got to Kindergarten that we had issues but he is doing GREAT last year and this year with the same teacher. He gets OT, PT and ST at school. He has a nanny that watches her NT grandson so he gets 1:1 NT time after school for a couple of hours.Minnesota - yes. We searched all over the SW Twin Cities to find a good school for ds and we are very happy with his school. He gets OT, ST and adaptive Phy Ed, plus social skills DAILY. We are working on changing that last one - as believe it or not, I think it is excessive. He misses out on morning meeting every morning in order to get it - so I would like to see that changed and we will be discussing that on Thursday. We used to live in Rochester, MN and you had to fight for any services you got for your child. I was able to do so successfully - don't know what it would have been like if ds had started elementary school there. Not good, I'm afraid. Although we were looking at a choice school and I think that would have been good for him. its okay Our school has many very nice teachers We have a private paid ABA program For our DAN doc we need to drive to Nashville I'm in IL too and I'm generally happy. From what I hear though, services in IL in general aren't so great. It varies greatly by community. We're fortunate to live in a good one. I'm in southwestern Wisconsin, and am very happy with the school district and all of the services they have provided. The county services, not so much. I met with someone this summer, and we are on a waiting list, but was told it would probably be 3-4 years before his name comes to the top of the list because of his age. I also called a county run mental health hot line this summer when he was being so physically aggressive and I wasn't sure what we should do next. I was transferred 3 times, with the last person asking me 'well, what do you want me to do?' Very frustrating! Madison, Wi. The early childhood could be better, but once they get to kindy spe ed services are pretty good. Excellent for the nt kids. The waiver program is really great, if you can get to the top of the list. I'm in the high arctic in Canada (norhtwest territories) - we have limited services, and have to fly south to Edmonton Alberta for a lot of the more indepth testing, appointments etc, but all in all, it is a very positive environment with a lot of services available...like anywhere, it is not perfect, but compromise nad working together with schools/doctors etc, make a world of difference in obtaining what services there are.Being in the second biggest city in our state and home to the largest medical center/conglomerate in the state helps us out a lot. This place is full of treatment options and we know a few families that have moved here specificly to obtain help for their children. It doesn't hurt that the cost of living here is relatively low in comparison to say Philly or Baltimore or DC.We are in middle Tennessee and the ei services I felt were very very good. DD receives speech and ot in kindergarten. I am disappointed that they do not have a social skills class but try to use the "speech" class for this purpose. KajoliT - you mentioned going to a DAN doc in Nashville. We are considering this route. Could you tell me which doctor your child is seeing? ttfn I originally lived in Dallas, Texas, where although there are services, many were out of my reach because of privatization/cost, and/or not covered by my insurance, and/or I had to fight with the schools to the point of due process to obtain them. The week before Christmas last year, I made the deliberate move to St. Louis, MO, solely in order to obtain better services for my son. What I've managed to obtain - through both the state and the school district, as well as privately through my insurance - are absolutely phenomenal by comparison to what we previously had. I have to stay on top of it all, but I would be doing that anyway. I live in Chicago, IL and think the services are crap! Our EI experience in Illinois was ok, therapists came to the house and seemed competent. I've been less pleased since he aged out into the school District program there are days I wonder whether or not some of the staff there has even heard of Autism, much less know how to handle it.I was wondering for everybody else from IL, are you registered for the PUNS database? We come nowhere near qualifying for any type of public services. I've had to pay for Respite myself when we use it. To me the whole PUNS thing seems to be "we have no money to offer you anything but here's a waiting list and if by some grace of God we ever did get money, then we'd know about you." I'm not holding my breath. I live in NY and so far our services have been great. EI gave us everything we wanted, including ABA, without even having a DX. Now we are in CPSE (school dist) and so far so good. My school district is small and farily easy to get services from. I don't anticipate too many problems once we transition to CSE, but who knows. I am in Ohio and our services are pretty good. LOVE our school district!! Hi We moved to Central Fl for a multitude of reasons from MA and I am heartbroken. Can anyone tell if their is a better place within the state of FL? If not in the country. Thanks you! Rho I am in Sarasota, Fl Ryan is in a Autism class with 4 other children. One Techer and one aide. He gets pulled out for speech and OT twice a week. They just recently started listening therapy with him. Overall, I'm pretty happy. We just moved from Jacksonville, Fl where he was in a autism class but it had 13 children in the classroom..which I think is too may children. Here in Sarasota they don't allow that to happen. Florida..is just not a good state to be in We are in Lewisville, Tx and the services are nothing to brag about. No autism classes here~they get put in spec-ed where the teachers dont know a thing about ABA or RDI. The speech teacher doesnt have a clue on how to teach a child with autism...nothing about pragmatics or social skills training at all. None of the teachers get trained to teach your child..its on you to educate them so you spend a ton of time sending links and trying to give them a picture of your childs needs as well as strengths so that they dont fall through the cracks. By time you think they understand you get comments how all kids are that way. This year is our 3rd year in public school and we finally got a teacher who at least knows about autism and has taught special education for 2 years..she now has 10 years of teaching under her and its the first time I am not so anxious because I know my dd is with someone who at least understands somethings about her. We just past a law to get insurance for ABA therapy paid for as well as ST/OT/PT for kids under 6 years of age but none of the therapists I know will accept it because they get more money being private. I am grateful that my dh was will to pay for private therapy for our dd so that she could get what she needed...otherwise we would of moved too. Where in southwest WI? I actually live right across the river from Prairie du Chien. I have been looking for people in this area. Angela
