*Update* We wonOk so we went to our IEP meeting with all the staff that works with our dd and plus from the special ed director of the county. We also had the Principle from the new school and the autism teacher there also. They basicly said that it is a self contained classroom and the students dont get to participate in the specials or regular ed. They say if they do it's a privilage and it can be taken away if behaviors get in the way. And my dd new special ed teacher was there along with her old one. Thank goodness the old one was there because the new one who has only worked with my dd for a month didnt have one positive thing to say about my dd. So basicly her old teacher said that you havent been fair to her and let her adjust to her schedule and you keep changing it on her. So instead of putting her in regular ed class. They are going to put her in resource small groups for reading, and math. Then she will get to go to specials also. The most exciting news for me is she will spend little time with the new special ed teacher only like 45 min out of the whole day!!!! Oh and I didnt tell you this either during our meeting the new special ed teacher asked " I dont know if this is apporpriate or not but I feel from you as a parent you feel I dont have your dd's best interest at heart." I should have said this isnt the appropriate time, but I said No I dont trust you your new with my dd and the previous teacher worked with my dd for quite some time and you are going to have to earn my trust. This is that lady that wanted to ship my dd to a school that has a program that she hasnt even checked out and claims she knows my dd and her sensory needs. My dd is pretty much beyond the sensory needs in the way of bouncing on a ball or swings. I am really nervous to have this lady as my dd teacher and case worker. How do I know she is going to do whats best for her. A picture is worth a thousand words, so often it's important to bring the child in for the team to SEE. Make certain that an FBA has been done and a BIP that is WORKING is in place. IF your dd suffers from ADHD, that can be a HUGE impediment. Over time, if the BIP doesn't work, you might want to consider medication. I know this is controversial, but I've seen kids suffer WAY less when things they have not been able to control, no matter how hard they've tried, suddenly GET under their control. Congratulations and good luck. Wonderful News! Doing a good job mom. Don't ya just hate it when they have nothing positive to say. My son tells me he can't do anything right for his Spec. Ed teacher. Makes me sad and mad. It's been a rough year for him, and we just started.
GA Mom, that is great! I am so happy for you. You fought and you won!
I'm tired of seeing kids thrown under the bus. Not just ASD kids, anyone who doesn't 'perform' like a mainstream child, they don't want to deal with it. And this nonsense of earning your way in with behavior is just wrong. They legally have to provide the LRE with supports in place. It's not sink or swim. Glad you saw through that and won. Kim PS. Everyone should know you can always ask for a 'class profile' of any self-contained program. They remove any personal information, but you can see performance levels and curriculum. I didn't know this until recently. If your child does not fit the profile you can challenge the placement. EXCELLENT news. I find myself in a similar, but somewhat less troubling position so identified strongly. GOOD FOR YOU. And Tzoya you reminded me to get an appt. for T to evaluated for ADHD! |
