Testing?OK, so Jack is scheduled for an EEG next Wednesday in order to hopefully rule out seizures. However, there are two other tests that I am thinking we might should have done...but I wanted some good advice from the members of this board who have 'been there, done that'. fMRI-I have been doing alot of reading on the new research concerning ASD children utilizing the right temporal lobe for speech moreso than the left...and that there can be specific speech therapy for such issues. Also, issues concerning delayed myelination would be a helpful area (I believe). ABR-Jack speaks...but it's jibberish. ST has commented that she is hearing the same garbles/jibberish for certain actions/objects, and worries that he might have a hearing issue that is not being picked up by the Tymp. Advice? Thoughts? Are there other reasons for or against these tests? The Dev Pedi is calling me back at 5 PM, and I definitely want to have my thoughts in order. Thanks! DD spoke a lot of gibberish at from 2 1/2 yrs to 3 1/2 yrs but rarely any jibberish now. Just wanted to share that. I did find some websites about it and dd did have a huge receptive (and still does) language delay. We did an MRI to b/c I wanted to rule out any huge abnormalities or brain damage. They did find delayed mylination on her MRI but they said there is nothing we can do. I would do the MRI again, though, b/c of she was delayed in so many areas. We also did the EEG to rule out seizures b/c she stares off a lot and is nonresponsive. Our dd told us he was 99% sure she was having absense seizures but her eeg was normal. We still want to do a 24 eeg but she will not tolerate the leads on her head while awake. I'm not sure what the ABR is but we have dd's hearing tested every 3 months since she was 18 months old b/c she has so many ear infections, ear tubes, and an ear tumor just recently. No hearing problems at all but it is very difficult to do the hearing test b/c she doesn't respond and is not cooperative but they keep telling me her heraing is normal and that her non responsiveness is due to her pdd and or auditory procressing difficulties. Hope this helps some. I would DEFINITELY conducet the ABR if he's going to be asleep anyway. The ABR takes about an hour and a half. See if you can arrange for it. We did the ABR and MRI at the same time. They totally sedated her (put her under) and both went smoothly. Everything looked normal on both. We needed to do the ABR because my dd had documented hearing loss in 1 ear. We think she had this for 9mos to a year and didn't know it. Then we got tubes/adenoids procedure, but couldn't get her to cooperate with the hearing test. ABR is the BEST test, because it not only measures if he/she can hear, but it also measures if the sound reaches the parts of the brain that it's supposed to reach...basically checks for any miswirings in the hearing systems. TRY to get them all scheduled at the same time due to the fact that the iv/hospital ordeal can be traumatizing. |
