Hi - I have discontinued services from ECI since they were just a waste of time. I do however want to try getting services like ST and ABA from the school system when DS turns 3 next May. Where do I start? Do I call the elementary school I am zoned to? Also, it is unreasonable to expect ABA? Where in Texas are you? I am in Lewisville/Flower Mound area and know BCBA & therapists for private ABA..I think the DFW center in Grapevine is taken insurance now..the schools here dont do ABA that I know of? Ours sure dont. The law for insurance to pay for OT and ABA just passed last year and from the folks I know doing the the ABA they are sticking with doing it private because insurance dont pay what they are used to getting~up to $30/hour for ABA and BCBA's get $85/hr and up! We do have ONE autism classroom in Flowermound and maybe they are getting ABA now? Most of the schools here are sped and not autism classrooms. Let me know:) Shelley, I am in Houston. The ECI coordinator had mentioned that we might be able to get ABA from the school system. Of-course that particular person is no longer at ECI...she had mentioned that there was a center that we would be able to take my son too.. So, should I just call the school? Who do I ask for?? I contacted the special education coordinator/or director of special education and go from there. Check out ABA center near you and see if they are willing to take insurance to pay for it. I would go with the one that offered the most 1:1 ABA with the most qualified people doing it. IF the school tells you they do a "teach, floortime and ABA' mix I would be leary of getting a watered down program that isnt accountable to take data or focus on skills enough...ABA needs to be 1:1 and intense in order to get the optimal results and a 1:2 or 1:3 isnt an ideal situation either especially if your child has a hard time engaging or eye contact, language issues..I think private in home therapy has the highest quality in my opinion...you get to watch and be in charge of who is working with your son and keeping on top of them so that mastered skills are not focused on day to day..a waste of time. We did private ABA till our dd was 6 years old:) Best of luck! I would guess that the school would provide PPCD (preschool program for children with disabilities), and possibly speech and OT. I would check your school district's website for which schools have preschool programs, or if there is a school just for preschool programs in the district. The school's PPCD teachers might have training in ABA, and sometimes schools offer a parent trainer that comes to the home. I'm not sure if they usually use ABA methods or not, or how the schools determine which students receive these services. I work for private schools and agencies, so I'm not exactly sure how the public school system works. Please let me know if you have any other questions...I have a vareity of ABA resources.
