Saw her this morning on Good Morning America~Thanks!I saw her this morning on Good Morning America, but one thing that
bothered me is that she led the interviewer into thinking that all people
with autism have gut issues and thus, what she is advocating can bring
them out of it.

But that's true only for a portion of the autism population. Many do not
have digestive problems or seizures like her son had. That's why I think the
diets are more effective for some than others. I just wish that had been
discussed.

Very, very good point, LVKim8.  I am bothered by the same thing regard to Ms. McCarthy.

I agree - even though I have only watched a little, I was struck by the fact that she was so dissmisive about ABA.

For those children on the spectrum that do not have food allergies or other environmental causes, she is being a little irresponsible by not emphasising ABA and other therapies.

I agree Sean does not have food allergies. I think ABA should be discussed. it really really worries me when a celeb parent publically denounces vaccines, or thinks the world of ONE specific type of therapy. It just makes me nervous. It's kind of like the Oprah effect

It is a spectrum, and thus there is a spectrum of treatments.

I've only seen Jenny on an old Oprah episode.  She was obviously totally sold about GFCF, but she was more neutral than I expected.  She didn't appear to be against vaccines, but against a "one size fits all" approach, and in favor of a greener approach.  Maybe it was Oprah's influence, or maybe Jenny's gotten more militant since then.

I'm really not a huge fan of Jenny McCarthy.   I saw her this morning on CNN and I could really do without the dropping of the word "Friggen" every other sentence.
I guess that is supposed to convey her anger, but there are better ways to do it and if she is going to be a Spokesperson she should learn them.

She has certainly become much more militant over recent years.  I remember seeing an interview with her right after her son was diagnosed and at that point there was no mention of the "they gave my son a vaccine and I knew instantly that something was terribly wrong, I watched my normal son become Autistic before my very eyes."

My main problem with her is that she gives people the impression that the GFCF diet will cure every ASD individual.  I am thrilled that her son is doing so well, but I can't tell you the number of people who have informed me and my husband that our child wouldn't be like this if we would only feed him the right food the way Jenny McCarthy does.  It is very frustrating.

I am pretty sure every parent of a kid with asd has a theory of what did or
did not cause autism and we are all passionate about our kids. I don't
care for famous people thinking that their opinion is more important or
more right than anyone elses. That is not using your celibraty for good
that is just plain old entitelment.
I saw her this am too and I felt really put off. Did she not start writing a
book first on her pregnancy, then on having a baby and then -once her
ds had a diagnosis- on autism. Just because you are famous and you do
something does not mean you are an expert.
Personally I am waiting for Norwaymom's or Tzoya's or any of your book
to come out and I will be thrilled to buy them.

Micki - I agree.

Norwaymom, Tzoya, Colinsmom - I would LOVE to read books by them!!

Regardless of how you feel about biomedical or Jenny herself, you have to give her credit for making people more aware of autism.  She may use some crass, unsophisticated language, but at least she's out there shouting that our kids need better treatments.

I know she gets a lot of flack about not mentioning other therapies in her books, but if she did mention them and didn't know enough about them or didn't say enough, she'd get just as much criticism, if not more.

I haven't been on this website for awhile but when I saw this topic I felt a need to reply. After reading NerdyMom and Micki's comments I think they pretty much summed up what I wanted to say but here are some additional thoughts.

It is amazing how the press attributes authority status on an individual just because they are already famous. It infuriates me that some families imply that all autism can be cured by the diets they advocate for. I am sure improvements can be made by proper diet for some. But just as it may be possilble to have differences in disorders on the spectrum and a variety of potential factors causing it- there is not one cure all. One must always be cautious when evaluating benefits of therapies; their use does not happen in a vaccuum. Any child will make at least some progress due to maturation and most parents do not only use one therapy, but many at a time. It can be difficult to then say which truely is the agent for change when more than one is done at a time.
