Input on vitamins in my case.

Hi Yolanda - I dont have much opinion about vitamins.... I would consult with the doctor as they can be dangerous if given too much.

I sent you a PM about a place in the area that does vitamin therapy you might want to check out...

Hope you find the answers you are looking for

MsSteelersFan38637.7034953704We think that Vitamins have helped Luke's focus.  He's on super-nu-thera and DMG, in addition to his multivitamins.  We buy the S-N-T and DMG from Kirkmans labs online.  I don't think vitamins would work for everyone, but they might be worth a try.  Definately worth discussing with your pediatrician.

Hi Yolanda, I can't help you much b/c we're researching vitamins (and how to get Ansley to actually take them) ourselves.  I do give her 2 of the omega3 rich eggs every day b/c I couldn't get her to take an omega 3 supplement.  I have seen a little improvement in her behavior, but we are also doing behavioral therapy/training with her...so who knows?

We are probably going to try the "trial size" of the Super-Nu-Thera from Kirkman labs b/c everyone seems to have had good results with this one (high B12).

There are a lot of threads about this under the Supplements (Other Treatments) forum that you should probably look into further...HTH!

That sounds like my son except mine has ADHD as well.

I have found that vits don't work but i think this is something that definately should be discussed with a dr.

I was also told by kieran's EA that not all the kids have settled and adjusted to the routine... could he need longer to adjust.  When are the parent/teacher interviews??

ANYONE?Vitamins do help also certain behavioral therpaies. Once junior started behavioral therapy, he learned how to pay better attention. Have you looked into that? It might be worth a shot!

Hello everyone.

My son is Hunter.  He's 7 and in the 1st grade.  He brought home his first progress report yesterday and the teacher listed her concerns for him in attentiveness, organization, and not following through when the work is challenging.

I've asked the teacher to tell me how she would like him to be organized and I will teach him, but when it comes to his attention and staying focused on his work, it's a different situation.  I can't "train" him to keep his attention on anything.

I've been reading posts about Vitamin B6 and another abbreviated vitamin and am asking if these would help my son with his attention span and help him finish his work.  He is a very smart little boy.  I feel a bit annoyed that his teacher put down that his attention and focus needs work when she knows he has autism.  Maybe she had to do it for his school record, I haven't spoken with her yet since I only saw the report yesterday.  Last year I was always reminding his Kindergarten teacher that in some areas Hunter has to be taught directly, a little more one on one, because he doesn't learn by watching the children around him.

If you think I should try one of these vitamins, do I buy them at the local drug store and does it say Vitamin B6 on the label?  I haven't looked at any other form of vitamins besides mine and his gummy bear vitamins.  He won't take the hard, crunchy vitamins, nor the bubble gum form.

Thanks for you help.  Looking forward to reading your responses.

go to kirkman labs and get the sample of supernuthera. Then go to your local HFS and get DMG. Both of these helped Jaden with eye contact, etc. Can't hurt to try.

I think me son took a lot from dad and I and he is what he is, personally I went thru major depression with diagnosis of son and mothers death in same year, and early menopause. after 5 years on anitdepressants, and losing myself I was told to try B VITAMINS, so after 2 weeks on B vit 100's my confusion was gone, stopped anti depressants over next year and now get up every day and take my B 100's, my mood swings are gone, which I had since child, my fears are normal and i can concentrate better, and the best result is my anger is gone. all becouse of vitamins, also if I switch brands they dont work as well. not all vitamins work. they are not as regulated so just cause one brand does not work does not mean dont try another, if I had found these years ago my life wold have been so much better, and yes i have my son on them. when he takes them it is better. another result of the vitamins was that all of the age related is better too, skin and hair, sleep and moods. so I am big on vitamins.

Hi,

Our son won't take anything that tastes 'yucky', doesn't like chewable vitamins, etc etc, so we went with the best alternative ... it's a multivitamin that's soft and chewable and is CHOCOLATE flavored. It tastes very much like a chocolate tootsie roll, but is softer and easier to chew. The brand is Viactin, and they make chewies for Calcium/Vitamin D as well as Multivitamin, so make sure you're getting the multivitamin chew.

I give him one every other day, since it's an adult vitamin. You could also cut up the "candy" in several pieces for daily dosage.

You can buy them at Walmart, your local grocery store, drugstore, etc.

And keep the box out of reach, because the "candies" are delicious!

I am not sure if this will help anyone or not but a friend of mine has a son with adhd and the doc had him on risperadol.  She tried this vitamin complex called Balance 1 and she swears by it now.  He is off the meds and is only on the vitamins and she says it is better than on them.  Her doc checked the ingredients out and said they were safe.  Here is the website if you guys care to check it out

We all need vitamins cause of soil depletion. Few Dr.'s are infavor of supplements. A blood test checking your nutrition will let you know if it's needed. Stay with liquid when possible they have greater absorbtion rates. You can hide it in juice. My GS takes Omega 3 fish oils with borage
Cod Liver Oil
Calcium with magnesium
All are disguised in juice.
All are organic.
We also finally found an organic multi vitamin chewable that he is happy to eat.
His diet is not restricted, as his only, but severe sensory issue is food.
He eats very little.
We did see a Dan Dr., and this is what he recommended after testing.
He also recommended GF, chelation, and insisted he was mercury poisened, and allergic to almost everything you could name.
So we just took his advice on the vitamins and never returned.
For a child who had no intervention, and wasn't diagnosed until a little over a year ago he is making rapid gains.
There has been a lot written recently about the different fish oils, and how they are even helping Alzheimers patients.
I can't say it is supplements that are helping his progress, but we feel that they will not harm him, and may indeed be helping him
Good luck, as all of our kids are different individuals.
Although we decided not to go the bio-medical way, for some kids with "gut" problems it really seems to work.
My GS has never had this problem, so we decided not to use drastic interventions.
We also put a cup of epson salts in his bath, and believe that this does help with relaxation and sleep issues.

HI

we just started the super nu thera a couple weeks ago. Now I don't know if it's all the  therapy, we are up to 16 now, or the vitamins, or what, but ds has been actually watching us. He has been so observant. I never got to see into those big blue eyes this long before. His eye contact inproved after starting the gf/cf diet, but now this has been amazing. he is also non-verbal except for da, da. but last night when we started the water for his bath he said "wa, wa", and then the next day when my mom was washing her face he said "wa, wa" and then again in the kitchen for his sippy cup. So we have a second word, and he used it in different contexts. The only new thing was the vitamins. Oh yeah he also 100% of the time would run to the front door to play with it whenever anyone came in or out. I mean you would have to drag him away from it kicking and screaming, you would have to announce that you were going out so someone could hold him back. That has decreased to maybe once or twice in the past two weeks. Now when one of us opens the door he just looks at us, smiles and that's it.  I just can't beleive all this is just a coincidence, it has to be because of the vitamins.

My granddaughter has been doing the supernu thera from kirkman's for a couple of years.  My advice would be to start slow.  Don't start giving him a lot of stuff at once as you won't know what works and what doesn't.  Kirkman Labs has a lot of different vitamins they sell.  You can call them and talk to a rep.  They are in Oregon.  Gia uses the multiple (it's liquid, tastes bad, her parents put in dropper and make her take it - she's use to it now but it was tough at first).  She uses the one higher in B6.  Our DAN dr recommended NOT to use a high does of B6 but to use B12.  Gia had bad crazy behavior with the B12.  I have now heard your kid either tolerates the B6 or B12.  You can buy the vitamins in trial sizes.  After you know that works for him then try the DMG (Gia couldn't take that either - she is overly sensitive to everything).  A lot of people say it works for stimming behaivors.  There is also TMG (I think it's called that).  If the DMG doesn't work you can try the TMG.  Neither worked for her.  Calcium and Magnesium is a good idea.  But be careful as in some children a higher does of magnesium will cause loose stools (which of course for Gia it did!!! so frusterating)  I just went to a seminar on  autisms and enzymes which I always thought was a good idea in theory but didn't have a clue to how much to give and blah, blah blah.  But I think we are going to try those - and start off slow.  Enzymes "supposedly" will heal the leaky gut (their intolerance to gluten and casein) which will then help with behavioral and sleeping problems.  I will keep you posted.  Yolanda, here's what has worked well for us:  DMG, Fish Oil and multi-enzymes for focus (it should be noted that he also takes Adderall and Strattera - the supplements don't completely take care of the problem), and B-6, magnesium and zinc for sensory intergration issues - this is where we have seen the most success with supplements.  Next, I want to try weaning him off of Zoloft and see where he is anxiety wise.  I'd really like to try a supplement such as Kava or St. John's Wort before putting him back on SSRI's.  I think it's going to be too difficult to monitor his needs during puberty, and if we can get away without the SSRI's, all the better!
