Teacher needs helpI'm about to go crazy. It's the fourth week of school and none of my materials have arrived! At first this was ok because we were 'pairing' with the student. I ordered touch math, edmark on level reading, handwriting without tears, and several other programs. The business admin. forgot to place the orders! I'm also attempting to complete the ABLLS-R without the manipulatives because they didn't place that order either! How am I supposed to fill a 7 hour day without my materials? I have tons of games/puzzles/ and access to the computer but I'd like to get a schedule going here. I feel like I'm playing babysitter. Any ideas? BTW, It's an autistic support program. I have one child at the moment who has strong imitation skills, verbal (one word response), and excellent puzzle skills. I have another non verbal student on the way. Can you substitute functional real life things? like coins in a piggy bank, or understanding common signs like "stop" "danger" "walk" using action games. How to play some common games/activities that same age peers play.. like catch, jump rope? Making simple recipes with cue cards "first-then schedule" and provides examples of verbs such as"pour" "stir" and modifiers like "on" "in" etc in things like juice, sandwiches, or pudding? Provide a sentence strip to model "agent +action + object" response to expand verbal response from one word and promote literacy. Presenting action based songs and allowing the child to imitate or take turns (verbally or nonverbally) especially if they have repetitive lines or actions. Or reading engaging stories with fun repetitive lines or characters, or actions like flaps allow the child to take a turn or fill in blanks... you can also expand to simple pretend play ie pretending to chug around the room as a train if the book was about a train and a favored item of the child. Understanding where different places are in the school based on pictures or verbally ie the office, library, gym, cafeteria etc. Helping you to fill things, count things, deliver, open, close things, marking off a checklist etc is a good way to foster social interaction and build skills and receptive ability. Just some ideas ... don't know if any are do-able while you wait for your supplies.
Hi. I was not going to use my website for this forum, but after reading this, it appears as if it would be a disservice not to. Check out www.autismclassroom.com for free downloads of visual supports, opening materials, scheduling devices and data sheets. I wish I joined earlier. Also, is there a local library to check out bos, DVD's and other types of media for free? Don't forget that parents can be your best resources if you just ask. |
