What therapies do you use/did you use?Hmmm... well not sure who your target voters are (parents?) but I myself being DX'ed with just 'HFA' as they called it in 1986 when I got that label but anyways their was nothing avalible to me and my family... from what I understand anyways, back then. Many of the services and theripy and all didnt come around till the mid 1990's (I think...) anyone DX'ed before that time basicly got thrown into spec ed and basicly you eather sank or swam. I was fortunate to swim, my teachers were great, my parents did alot of good too, so I guess for the most part the only theripy I got was for the most part anyways to just live a normal childhood as much as possible and just learn how to socialize on my own. It worked. We are using biomedical interventions along with RDI techniques. DS also goes to preschool where they use ABA techniques, though not all out, intensive ABA. He also goes to speech and OT. So far, he's responding beautifully!Full time VB/ABA 30 hours a week, speech therapy 2 hours a week, Biomedical stuff~nystatin for yeast, glutithione cream for high lead, supernuthera, fish oil, enzymes, DMG, GfCF diet-one year..ABA playgroup 2x week for 2 years, ABA therapist shadowed her in pre-k 2x a week for 2 years. She was mainstreamed for kindergarten with no supports except speech 30 minutes a week. She is now in 2nd grade and no supports whatsoever and doing awesome. :)Questions: What does DTT stand for? ![]() What is SCERTS? ![]() Also (Shelly?), isn't VB - in simple terms speech therapy that uses ABA techniques? Is there any special VB certification (separate from ABA cert.)? I've asked around here and though teachers, therapists, moms have heard of it - they insist that they already use it on ds & students. They say where we live no one does VB as a separate therapy. I keep reading about it on these boards and how great it is, so I'm confused. Maybe it just hasn't gotten around to my area yet? ![]()
I wish medicaid would allow biomed cuz I would go that route. Until then, I just have to do what I can do.
If you've never read it, the book Children with Starving Brains does a great job of explaining the biomedical treatments, and you can do a lot of it on your own. You can shop around for less expensive supplements, learn to cook according to the diet, etc. to make it more affordable. It's still not cheap or easy, but the book would give you a good idea of what you can and can't do on your own and on a budget. I don't know what any of those things are..lol We had intensive speech, OT, PT, autism specialists, developmental specialists, psychologists..but mostly, MOM. I would sit in the bathroom with taylor, door shut, sitting cross legged in front of her. I used music (although my singing might not have been the best therapy..lol), and at one time, she would sing back with TWINKLE TWINKLE. Her autism regresses, progresses and regresses again--she is again, non verbal but we have heard her say things when she doesn't know anyone is listening. We have done touch therapy, pressure therapy, weight therapy (weighted vests), pilates maneuvers, baby einstein (she loves that), Timed learning with reward. I am probably missing a bunch. She also used pecs..but now is on a communication board where she is speaking in full sentences on it. It is electronic and funded by the school (but stays at the school), but she is smart as a whip with computer things and had it figured out before they had time to teach her all of it..lol I wish medicaid would allow biomed cuz I would go that route. Until then, I just have to do what I can do. God Bless, Kelly Our ABA therapists while getting her credentials and masters degree went to New York on a internship and was taught Verbal Behavior/ABA from Vincent Carbonne~the person who created VB/ABA therapy. It focuses on getting language from your child and having them mand for things using reinforcements..errorless teaching and fading out prompts. Look up Verbal behavior by Vincent Carbonne and see if you can learn more about it. I am clueles other than being told the focus is more on getting words out of your child which was my biggest concern at the time:) I did speech therapy 2 hours a week on top of VB/ABA and looking back I should of spent the money from ST and put it into the VB/AbA..it was more productive and faster...cheaper:)![]() |
