head tilting and side looking-ambient lenDD does this a lot. Tilts her head to the side and looks out the corner of her eyes. I saw this research article on ambient lenses to help with that. Does anyone's child do this and if so what helps. It
http://www.latitudes.org/articles/amb_lens.html Mine did this for awhile. I think it's sensory. I ignored it and it went away. I ignored lots of "odd" behaviors and concentrated only on the ones that were truly disabling. The odd behaviors all eventually went away. Of course, HOW odd and how old/functional the child is when doing these things makes a difference. But I believe some of it is experiementation.Mr. B does this frequently throughout the day, 95% of the time in conjunction with an increased need for releasing energy or calming himself. He looks out of the corner of his eye at a particular object he holds close by - almost always something straight (these days, the favorite is a toothbrush), then proceeds to clinch it tight enough his hand/arm shakes, and then he runs back and forth - average time is about 5 minutes, and then he's on to something else. Very rarely, he will do it while playing on the floor with his trains - using a train or piece of track as he puts it into place. The teachers have noted he does this frequently at school when working with writing implements - coloring, drawing, practicing letters, etc. He will also do it with sticks outside on the playground, although they usually attempt some type of redirection when it occurs there. I'm in the process of locating a provider to have his vision examined. I'll read the research and see what they have to say. We used Cod Liver Oil for this. When she is on it faithfully, a tsp daily, she never has eye stims. When she is out for a week here come the eye stims again. Imagine that, something EASY! THis is very interesting to me becasue this is my sons MAJOR problem! He also has an eye condition called Duane's syndrom so I thought that this might contribute to the visual stimming. NOW YOU HAVE THE WHEELS TURNING IN MY HEAD. I will call his pediatric optomologist tomorrow! Thanks!!
Hayley I am with Tzoya, Jimmy did this when he was younger, I ignored it and it went away. Kat I forgot to add, when she looks out the corner of her eyes she is usually looking out windows, should does this 80% of the day if I would let her. or she runs back and forth in place. It seems severe to me b/c she is not looking or listening and does not respond when she does this. She has done this since birth but it has gotten worse as she gotten older, and occurs more often. In a lot of photos you will see her looking out the corner of her eyes.I think Allegra got lenses for her daughter. When I searched for "ambient lens" on Research Autism, it came up with this information (including their opinion on its effectiveness): http://www.researchautism.net/interventionitem.ikml?ra=2& ;infolevel=4 I have some more information under "Irlen lenses" here: http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=27905&am p;PN=1&TPN=1 My younger son does this ALL THE TIME. It interferes with his play skills but I'm not sure how to correct it. He LOVES trains and will watch the wheels obsessively. Any suggestions would be helpful! |
